From the owner

“For us, the location is the jewel in Butterfield´s crown; its enviable position overlooking pretty St Mawgan is idyllic. On a Sunday, there´s no better way to round off the weekend than a woodland walk through the valley to Mawgan Porth beach after a roast with all the family.”

From the owner

The picturesque village of St Mawgan lies in the wooded valley known locally as The Vale of Lanherne, and is dissected by the River Manahyl that flows towards Mawgan Porth beach. We love how much character the village has, with its old cottages, wooded slopes and the 16th century Falcon Inn clustered around the cricket green.

The house itself was designed in 1858 by the distinguished architect William Butterfield, who used the local red-streaked Delabole slate. A major figure in Victorian architecture, Butterfield was responsible for landmark buildings from Keble College, Oxford to St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, as well as restoring the Church of St Mawgan and designing the village school!

The house was used as a rectory until the early 1970s and was listed Grade-II in 1988. Since then, it has undergone renovation but still remains wonderfully authentic and happily retains many original features. A real gem, we think our house is truly special and hope that you see it as we do.

Our stay was just perfect. We couldn´t have imagined it being any better. We were so grateful to the owner for making it so special, everyone had a wonderful time. We would buy the property if we could! We will definitely be recommending the property to all of our family and friends. I would also like to say a big thank you to the housekeeper who was extremely helpful during our stay.

Butterfield House sits in absolutely stunning grounds in a beautiful part of Cornwall, the gardens are a delight. The kitchen is well equipped and the library contains many excellent books and our eleven year old granddaughter spent many hours immersed in her reading. The housekeeper is thoroughly helpful and what a nice guy he was. Thank you all so much, we will love to come back!

Lovely weather. The house was beautiful and well equipped, we were well looked after and spent a lot of time hiding from tourists at the property. It was so peaceful. Would love to return.

We had a lovely week staying at Butterfield House and all the family enjoyed it very much, especially since the pool had been made ready for our arrival. It’s a gorgeous house in a beautiful setting, the gardens were stunning and the children also enjoyed the zip wire and swing. Just returned from an absolutely fantastic stay in Butterfield House and wanted to thank you for providing such a wonderful home from home. The owners must be absolutely over the moon with such a property.
