The Found | Luxury Self-Catering Martello Tower | Bawdsey, Woodbridge

The Found

Bawdsey, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK

For a unique escape like no other, whisk the party away to this exclusive, luxury self-catering Martello tower set on the shores of the Suffolk coastline in a secluded Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the moment of arrival via the sandy track and ascending flight of steel stairs, The Found gives the fluttering butterfly feeling of boarding a private jet. Only here it’s not about the journey, it’s all about the destination.

Introduction

The Found was originally built to defend Napoleonic forces in the 1800s and, after a stylish renovation, now offers a unique self-catering retreat. An occasion house with a capital 'O', this imposing Martello tower in Bawdsey comprises almost a million bricks wrapped around one huge central brick shaft, inviting guests to kick back over three floors of contemporary living spaces. If you can tear yourself away from living like Royals at the tower, the coast path running below is perfect for a picturesque morning jog. As for afternoons, hire a Big Sky classic car for the day and enjoy old-fashioned jaunts along winding coastal roads in your vintage Morgan.

Inside

Entering on the first floor, guests are welcomed into a circular snug area laid with shaggy rugs and stacked with firewood. From here, a spiral staircase sweeps up to the rooftop level, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide 360-degree views of the Suffolk coastline. Heading downstairs from the first floor, the modern-rustic design flows towards the tower’s sleeping quarters, comprising two sharply modish bathrooms and three sumptuous double bedrooms. Pipes of natural light flood through the fortress’s three-metre walls via angular drilled holes, whilst camera obscura project hazy outside views into the smaller bedrooms, creating a beautiful juxtaposition of elements.

Outside

The Found’s jaw-dropping roof terrace will rival any in the city when it comes to entertaining. Complete with panoramic views, guests will love to mellow out on the Morroccan-style floor seating and bask in the warm sun during the day. At night, watch as an explosion of stars pinprick the sky, casting darkness over the rolling Suffolk countryside to the west and leaving twinkly reflections in the water meadows and lagoon to the east. As for the surrounds; situated in the small, rural hamlet of Bawdsey, Orford is 13 miles to the north while the riverside town of Woodbridge is a 20-minute drive - desirable holiday destinations for foodies and yachties respectively.

From the owner

“The 360 degree views from top floor are amazing at any point during day; whether it be morning brightness, moving clouds, sun or moon shining through the round windows in the roof. This has to be one of our favourite areas.”

From the owner

The Found was built as part of a fortification against Napoleon's threat of invasion. Completed in 1808 using over 700,000 bricks in total, it was one of around 100 Martello towers erected in early 19th century. To this day, you can still see the three canon stands on the top floor.

A huge labour of love spanning eight years of work and dedication, the house was converted by a renowned designer, supported by a leading architect. Itself a scheduled monument by English Heritage, The Found’s conversion won a RIBA Award in 2010, and following this, was also shortlisted for the Manser Medal too.

Boasting such a unique character and history, and with so much to see and do in the surrounding areas too, we hope that The Found captures your heart and imagination just as much as it has our own.

Guest Testimonials

The Found is such a unique home! The property certainly has the wow factor in terms of location, interior design, architectural features and comfort! We certainly enjoyed the countryside and proximity to the coastal path and the beach. We enjoyed marvelling at the stars, listening to the waves and the wildlife from the roof terrace. Firepit on, we enjoyed the evening vibes having cooked in the kitchen in subtle relaxed lighting. We all slept for 10 hours each night after all the fresh air, enhanced by the darkness in the bedrooms. We really enjoyed our Unique Homestay!

Usually photos flatter a property and whilst the online photos look superb, when you see it in person The Found exceeds expectations - we were gobsmacked at the fact we were staying there. Such a treat.

I had never been to Suffolk before so The Found was a great opportunity for us to try a unique property with total privacy, something so rare to find these days! A total joy.

We had the best stay at The Found. From misty morning sunrises, pebble hunting, to cosy evenings in front of the fire. We enjoyed windswept walks and we slept like babies within our ‘fortress’. A real escape from reality, this is a ‘unique’ property in every sense of the word. We felt really privileged to be able to stay and we’ll definitely be back!
