The Chalk House | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Mousehole, Cornwall

The Chalk House

Mousehole, Cornwall, UK

Perched above Mousehole bay in a nest of exotic gardens, The Chalk House takes prime position in one of England’s most charming seaside villages. Dating back to Victorian times, this luxury self-catering retreat has a nostalgic appeal. Ebony coloured floorboards and whitewashed walls give vintage verve, whilst cool lighting and copper pots add flourishes of industrial charm.

Introduction

Dip your toes into the warm, whimsical Cornish life with a break at The Chalk House. This luxury home was tenderly handcrafted by a local stonemason around 1900; his treasured tools buried in the garden and his family still living in the village today. Full of history and evoking the romance of old-fashioned seaside holidays, The Chalk House invites guests to swim in the harbour, cosy by the fire and mosey around Mousehole, popping into art shops and ice-cream parlours, until the sun goes down.

Inside

Start your day with the sun beating down over hazy blue seas; the views from the kitchen are simply gorgeous. Let the coastal panoramas and a perky coffee revive the senses, before heading out for a dip in Penzance's art deco sea pool. With spectacular coast paths and secret coves galore, there is plenty to grab your attention nearby during the day. Upon return, rinse off salty skin in the bathroom’s sea-view, freestanding tub before hunkering down by the woodburner, glass of chilled fizz in hand.

Outside

The Chalk House's lush coastal gardens are quite a rarity in Mousehole, offering a sublime vantage point for soaking up the village's tangle of quintessential fishermen's cottages and panoramic sea views. Sprawling over two tiers, the outdoor arena makes for a fun-filled afternoon of garden games, spilling late into the evening when guests can keep toasty by the crackling fire pit. Christmas here is an extra special occasion, with the magical twinkling of Mousehole's iconic harbour Christmas lights, drawing admirers from afar.

From the owner

“We fell in love with Mousehole many years ago, and when we saw The Chalk House it was as if all the stars had aligned! Every time we stay, it reinforces how special this place is and fills us with desire to come back time and time again.”

From the owner

We believe that the true beauty of our home is in its unique and elevated position within the village. It not only allows you to soak in the unrivalled panoramic sea views across Mousehole harbour and beyond to Cornwall's legendary St Michael's Mount, but its position also provides you with an escape from the hustle and bustle of this quaint traditional fishing village, encouraging peace and tranquillity.

Renovating The Chalk House back in 2013 was a labour of love for my husband and I. It transformed my husband's dream of relocating from London to Mousehole into a glowing reality and we've never looked back! We hope you love it just as much as we do.

Guest Testimonials

We´ve had a perfect time at The Chalk House. Everything was just perfect: the location, the interior, the sea view, the welcome present. It felt like home and we really enjoyed our stay a lot. It was actually hard to leave! I would like to thank you for taking care of everything and we will definitely look for a Unique Homestay again next time we spend our holidays in the UK.

The Chalk House has managed to tick off all our disparate boxes. Quietly chic? An air of seclusion and privacy? Outdoorsy feeling? Child-friendly? Done and done! What a charming cottage, it was so perfect even our three year old said he never wanted to leave.

The Chalk House is a beautifully decorated home with a hidden garden that has views over this pretty fishing village. It felt like a true home from home.

We had a really lovely time! The house and area was amazing. The hamper was lovely and a pumpkin was also left for for us to carve which was very kind and a great personal touch. Thank you for a great holiday!
