Oyster Catcher | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage | Mousehole, Cornwall

The Oyster Catcher

Mousehole, Cornwall, UK

It's the weather-beaten fisherman's cottage in which Vogue chose to stay when writing their week-long review of "Mousehole: the most charming little town on the English Seaside" - and it's easy to see why. A Grade-II listed former net loft doused in white-washed coastal charm, The Oyster Catcher is not only impossibly attractive,  but occupies one of the best spots in the village directly on the harbour's edge.

Introduction

There's no end to this little home's acclamation. Featured in numerous coffee table books and listed number one in the Sunday Times' round up of "50 Best Self-Catering Cottages", the Oyster Catcher embodies refined seaside chic. Stylish and elegant, the old net loft occupies one of the most coveted positions in the village with unrivalled harbour views. Soak up balmy Cornish rays with a bottle of ice-cold cloudy cider in the suntrap garden, or venture down to the bay for a paddle and bathe in the orange light of Mousehole's famous sunsets.

Inside

White-washed walls, exposed beams, cleverly repurposed finds and sumptuous furnishings create a calming wash throughout. Lounge on the window seat and watch boats drift lazily on the horizon before curling up on the sofa with a paperback. Made even cosier in winter with the woodburner crackling away, this ethereal space is a real haven. On cool nights, sink into the bathroom’s stand-alone claw foot bathtub, before winding down in one of the two ground floor bedrooms, entwined between the sheets of the king-size beds.

Outside

The Oyster Catcher's cobbled shared courtyard garden is tucked away from the crowds and filled to bursting with roses and blooms, tempting al fresco dining in the mild Cornish climate. The wraparound veranda is approached by the kitchen, alive with leafy foliage and kissed by salty air - a welcoming tonic for weary travellers. Step out the front door and weave your way around the village’s tiny, winding streets lined with ice cream shops, artists' retreats and fish restaurants. Pick up some fresh bread, rocket and local crab, and find some warm rocks on which to set up lunch.

From the owner

“We love The Oyster Catcher´s position on the waterfront, just one of the aspects which makes our home so special. Inside, we hope you will find the simple yet luxurious interiors just as welcoming. We feel deeply privileged to act as custodians to such a fabulous place; one that has existed long before and will exist long after us.”

From the owner

With foundations dating back to the early 1600s, the building shares much of its history with the Cornish fishing industry. Because of its enviable position right on the harbour front, The Oyster Catcher was an integral workshop, net loft and ‘pilchard palace’.

By the First World War, the pilchard industry was in huge decline. Pilchard palaces closed down making way for the tourist trade and the house, owned over many generations by a well-known Cornish family, was divided into private living accommodation. Welcome, The Oyster Catcher!

Following an emerging wave of artists in the area, Christopher Wood is reputed to have spent so much time painting at The Oyster Catcher that a skylight was installed for him. Renowned local artist Jack Pender is also said to have spent time here.

We fell in love with the building straight away. We spent many months intensely renovating the property and were mindful that our work be in keeping with its rich history, obvious charm and beauty. We feel deeply privileged to act as custodians to such a fabulous place; one that has existed long before and will exist long after us.

We were very pleased with The Oyster Catcher, its aesthetic, furnishings and the generosity of the owner in providing us with a welcome hamper. We enjoyed waking up to the harbour and found the house and town to be centrally located for exploring. We will highly recommend this property to our friends.

The Oyster Catcher is such a beautiful property, we really loved it. The interiors and style of the house are gorgeous and it was wonderfully well equipped. I loved all the books too, such a treat to relax and look through. We hadn´t visited Mousehole before but it really is lovely, small but with some nice little shops and pubs and the perfect little beach in front of the house was great.

Just a short note to let you know that we had a fantastic stay and a warm welcome from the owner. Very friendly people! I also don`t want to miss telling you that we were so surprised and overwhelmed by the "welcome basket". Thank you very much for this nice present. As I do events, I more than appreciate your perfect organization and offered homes. I will recommend you to my friends and partners.

Incredible location on the quay wall at Mousehole, we couldn´t have asked for a better location. The views from the living room are stunning. You could spend all day looking out of those windows with everything seemingly at your fingertips! The whole experience was wonderful.
