Dusky Cottage | Luxury Self-Catering | Hope Cove, Kingsbridge

Dusky Cottage

Hope Cove, Kingsbridge, Devon, UK

Remember the snow-white thatched cottage you'd sketch as a child, the one by a pretty bay and bright blue sea? With swings in the garden, a hot tub and four-poster bed, Dusky Cottage is a unique luxury self-catering retreat and a childhood dream home come true. Play in the waves at Hope Cove, saunter around Salcombe with an ice cream in hand and enjoy country walks in the South Hams until the cows come home.

A land of boats and boutiques, palm trees and proms; it's easy to see why Devon's South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is such a desirable destination for luxury family holidays by the sea. Dusky Cottage is equidistant between the yachting havens of Kingsbridge and Salcombe, set on an idyllic country lane leading down to the golden bay of Hope Cove. Push open the sky-blue gate and you'll be smitten. This 250-year-old self-catering cottage is sure to capture the hearts of all the family.

With its four-poster bed, the master bedroom is like one from a storybook and sits alongside two twin bedrooms - all of which enjoy far-reaching southerly vistas of the rolling hills. One of the twins features an en suite shower room, whilst the other bedrooms share the family bathroom with its tempting claw-foot tub. The ruby red and royal blue guest suite is on the ground floor. Perfect for Grandma, this bedroom is just off the drawing room and has an adjoining shower room.

After fresh coffee and sugar-dusted pastries on the terrace, take a short drive down the lane to discover the tiny hub of Hope Cove. Here you'll find a pint-size harbour, gorgeous sandy bay and smattering of delightful eateries tucked between undeveloped cliffs. Let the infectious atmosphere win you over, at what will soon feel like your home-away-from-home. A day of beachy adventures will have you yearning for the comfort of the cottage come dusk, where a bubbling wooden hot tub and fire pit await - campfire songs optional (but when else does one get the chance?)!

From the owner

“The cottage is best described as a place to chill; whether chatting by the Aga in the kitchen, sipping Champagne in the hot tub or just dozing in the summerhouse listening to the cows mooing in the fields - it´s difficult not to relax here.”

From the owner

Dusky Cottage was built about 250 years ago and was originally two farm workers' cottages. Since its humble beginnings it has been extended and renovated and when we bought the cottage in 2011, it had been a family holiday home for many years. We fell in love with the cottage and its special atmosphere as soon as we saw it.

Since we have owned Dusky Cottage, we have carried out several improvements, mainly to the garden. In particular the area directly behind the cottage was a collection of broken sheds and an old abandoned green house. This has been re-landscaped and transformed into a sundeck with an amazing hot tub which is fantastic for stargazing.

In addition to this, we bought part of the field behind to extend the garden and were inspired by a family road trip in California to put in a fire pit. It is a lovely place to sit with your gin and tonic and watch the sunset.

We have also completely redecorated the interior of the house and you may recognise one of the beds from Sex and the City - we will leave you to guess which one!

Guest Testimonials

A magnificent property to holiday in. Wonderful position, excellent facilities, picture book perfect looks, characterful, spacious, spotlessly clean.

We had a fantastic time staying at this beautiful cottage for my mum´s birthday, she absolutely loved it and said it was one of her favourites, and there´s been a fair few! The decor is perfect plus cosy rooms! The living areas and the hot tub was a, especially huge hit in this cold, windy weather! We plan on returning to experience Dusky Cottage in the summer months.

What a surprise for my 60th Birthday. I love this cottage so much in every way. I really didn´t want to leave! The beaches are amazing and the weather has been so kind! The family used the hot tub daily, what a treat. It was a really fantastic way to spend my birthday. We will all be back for sure!

Wow! What a fantastic, comfy cottage, and in a great location! We thoroughly enjoyed our walks around the area. West Soar was our favourite. The Village Inn at Thurlestone serves superb food. The fresh air blew away the cobwebs and new memories were made. The dog had a blast too! Many thanks!

We have had a fantastic time at Dusky Cottage. The house is stunning and had everything you could possibly wish for, the weather was amazing too! We both agreed that this is one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. A big thank you to everyone, and we will most certainly be back.

This cottage was truly beautiful with a very thoughtful layout and decor. We have stayed in your cottages several times and you have set the bar very high with regards to the standards we expect, which is why we return to you every year. Our friends who have never stayed in one of your properties were absolutely blown away by the cottage and could not believe it was even better than the pictures on the website. We of course expected it to be as you have not disappointed us yet.

We really enjoyed our stay and thought the cottage was really well appointed. So well thought out it felt really like a home from home - great decor and equipment (great touches like the Bose speakers to connect to and remote controlled gas stove). I loved it.

What a beautiful thatched cottage in the countryside. I was overwhelmed with how luxurious the property was, both inside and out. Although it´s a huge property, the moment you walk through the door you feel right at home. I was amazed at the uniqueness of each room and you can tell a lot of thought had gone into the cottage. My family and I had a wonderful time and we will definitely be returning in the near future.

We loved our stay at Dusky Cottage. The hot tub and fire pit were both such a treat! The grand master bedroom has an enormously comfy bed and every detail has been thought about. The kitchen is so well equipped and cooking on the Aga was a fun experience. Thank you for allowing us to stay in this wonderful property - we will be back!
