New Forest luxury modern self-catering home with pool | Romsey

Romsey, Hampshire, UK

Glimpses of architectural perfection hint at the scale of this exceptional modern home as you approach via its mile-long drive flanked by woodland and wild deer on the edge of rural Romsey. Using cutting edge eco-friendly design, Roscoe is made of little more than wood, glass and stone, with a heated indoor pool bringing together all the essential elements for a luxury self-catering escape near the New Forest National Park.

The bright lights of London soon fade into insignificance on the two hour drive from the city towards the New Forest. Genteel villages dot the landscape, transporting guests to a place where wild ponies roam Hampshire's flower-filled heathland and deer flit in the distance. In striking contrast to the ancient sylvan surrounds, one mile down a private lane near Romsey lies this extraordinary self-catering celebration house. Roscoe is a place of straight lines and modern luxury, of calmness and natural beauty; a place where large groups can gather for sublime escapism. Think morning workouts in the gym, ice cold cocktails on the terrace and midnight dips in the heated swimming pool.

A full stop at the end of a wooded drive, this contemporary architectural home is a design lover's dream. A minimalist interior scheme sets the scene for a serene stay, where freestanding egg baths, floating staircases and modern art afford a sleek finish with a surrealistic edge. A large entrance atrium flows into the open-plan living area with its Porro dining table and sliding doors leading to the sun-drenched patio. Upstairs, four spacious double bedrooms enjoy Porcelanosa en suites and a wraparound balcony, where the hanging swing chair is the perfect spot to wile away an afternoon with a paperback as the rest of the party prep supper.

The house sits in 13 acres of wildflower gardens, lawns and paddocks bordering the northern edge of the New Forest, ideal for those wanting to squirrel away. Visitors in search of something more lively, however, are sure to be lured in by Romsey's merry market-town spirit. Annual events include The Mayor's Picnic, The Beggar's Music Fair, the storytelling festival and horse show - not forgetting the summer and winter carnivals where the Christmas light switch on illuminates the town in dazzling display of a thousand twinkling fairy-lights. For those lucky enough to stay in winter, a magical experience awaits when snow falls and the forest becomes a real-life Narnia.

‘Romsey´ is believed to take its name from the Old English version ‘Rum Island’, denoting its time as a monastic retreat in the early Middle Ages. Today it´s a resoundingly quintessential English market town; agricultural shows, literary festivals, carnivals and all.

From the owner

“I created the space with socialising at the forefront of my mind and in keeping with this, I also wanted the house to flow freely throughout to allow for open, airy spaces in which people can relax and enjoy being with one another.”

From the owner

Roscoe was designed to be a family home through and through, and my son and I have made many treasured memories here. Family is very important to us and this area is very special; my son attends the boarding school just up the road from here, and my sister moved her life from Ukraine to Hampshire so that she could help with the house.

The interiors have been designed as a carefully curated fusion of East-meets-West. Pieces were specifically chosen to create a balance between the two cultures. Collecting art from up-and-coming artists is also a much-loved hobby of mine, you will see a variety of hand-picked works that I particularly enjoy throughout the house.

As I travel quite extensively between Croatia and Ukraine, it is a pleasure to be able to share my home.
