Bellatrix | Large Luxury Self-Catering Manor | South Cornwall Coast

Antony, Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, UK

Gothic in stance but flamboyantly playful within, this large luxury self-catering manor house sits three miles from Whitsand Bay on Cornwall’s long lost Rame Peninsula. Through the heavy front door guests are greeted by a celebration of old-meets-new with stained glass windows sitting alongside botanical wallpaper and chandeliers hanging from cathedral-like ceilings. Outside, a heated pool, treehouse and large stretches of lawn ensure plenty of space for families to run free.

From school, to rectory, to military stronghold in WWII, if Bellatrix’s walls could talk, they would sit one down over a bottle of port and wax lyrical about all who have walked its halls over the past 200 years. Since evolving into a luxury homestay for large groups, the current owners have added flair in abundance with velvet pink sofas, patterned tiles and rolltops galore. For eagle-eyed guests staying in the master suite, Johnny Depp is said to have left his mark in a carving on the stone wall while filming Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland at neighbouring Antony House.

Inspired by Kit Kemp’s fearless Firmdale Hotels, Bellatrix’s interiors are bold and elegant with a hint of giddiness thrown in. On the ground floor, original terracotta tiles line the kitchen, stone fireplaces throw heat over plush sofas while elephants march across the bathroom walls. Upstairs, seven bedrooms sleeping up to 16 guests span two floors, all flaunting vaulted ceilings, mullion windows or large, statement headboards. A calming snug with woodburner, books and boardgames aplenty will tempt cosy after supper cocktails and deep conversation.

The winding lanes, villages built on strong community spirit and rugged coast of the Rame Peninsula stand apart from the rest of Cornwall, giving this south-eastern corner a personality all of its own. The twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand sit pretty over Maker Heights hill, offering friendly pubs and safe swimming beaches while the Rame Head Heritage Coast is as wild as its sunsets are spectacular. Back at Bellatrix, gather round the al fresco dining table for a barbecued fish supper before sliding into the pool for a midnight dip under scintillating skies.

From the owner

“Our favourite time is spring when the swallows appear and reclaim their nesting spots, but all year round it has a magical feeling. Arriving through the tall gate posts, driving up the cobbled driveway and twisting around the Harry Potter-like pine tree to see the house ahead never fails to surprise.”

From the owner

This is a family home; we have cherished the property since 2005 and had many wonderful holidays and special occasions here including Christmas, New Year, weddings and other celebrations we still talk about today.

One of the most notable guests was Tim Burton, the film director and his wife, Helena Bonham-Carter back in the early days of our guest experience. When visiting you can read our visitor's book, where you will see his notes on their stay while filming Alice in Wonderland at neighbouring Antony House.

Antony House is the original reason for this property coming into existence back in 1842, it was built as the schoolhouse for the estate children and was followed by the construction in the 1860s of the church of St Mary and St Phillip at the end of the garden. The house subsequently became the vicarage for the parish and eventually, after a stint during the war and occupation by HM Armed Forces when the wine cellar bomb shelter was reinforced, it became a family home; we are the third private owners.

Guest Testimonials

We are looking forward to another stay at Bellatrix, it is a wonderful house with such a lovely vibe, all the different generations get something from this property and it is so close to Whitsand Bay, we visited most days!

What a stunning home! So many spaces for quiet reading, family chats, children playing, etc, and then there´s outside - A beautifully maintained garden, as well as the pool and outdoor dining space. We played games in the paddock field and enjoyed the sunshine on the loungers. It was such a great time with family, and so nice to be able to get round the dining table and enjoy some raucous discussions after two very quiet years!

This beautiful house provides ample space for lots of fun with family and friends, what an incredible property to create magical memories in. Each room provides something different from the next, with truly stunning interiors and a lavish garden for plenty of fun-filled activities.
