You may have heard a whisper travelling on the wind about the iconic Irish cottage with the red iron roof, a unique self-catering hideaway lost within a wilderness of emerald green farmland and cloud-shrouded mountains for hundreds of years... Here it is. Set in the remote lakeside townland of Treangarriv in County Kerry, staying at Lost Cottage will connect you to what’s real and silence what’s not: the truest luxury.

Unique self-catering cottage in County Kerry, Ireland

Kerry is world-renowned for its raw, majestic beauty, but it’s the secret spots that really hold the magic. Once a winter refuge to a herd of mountain goats, Lost Cottage now opens it's doors as one of the most unique self-catering cottages in Ireland. New Larch roof timbers were foraged from the forest behind the cottage whilst the mud floor was stripped back and lime rendered, dressed with furnishings crafted from local Douglas Fir. Whether an adventure-loving family, couple or solo traveller, this romantically remote cottage promises an utterly inspiring escape.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Each perfectly pared-back, the twin bedroom lies behind the cottage sitting room, whilst the bathroom walks through to the master with en suite rainfall shower in the modern poured concrete extension. This was designed to mirror the old cottage beside it, using wood grain oxidised concrete to colour-match the mountains and seamlessly merge into the landscape. The bathroom has a glass roof so that bathers can stargaze from the sunken tub, and being set in Ireland's first International Dark Sky Reserve, guests are guaranteed a dazzling show.

Step onto the Kerry Way right from the doorstep and see how far your legs will take you along the 200km walk which loops around the Iveragh Peninsula through some of Ireland’s most dramatic countryside. Those wanting a wild and windswept adventure can ride along the water’s edge of Rossbeigh beach on horseback, or cycle the Muckross trail through Killarney National Park. On balmy days, head down to Dooks beach, where you'll be unlikely to find anyone other than the owner's extended family, or take the drive to Coumeenoole beach (made famous by the film Ryan's Daughter) where sea-pounded rocks, gold sand and turquoise waters combine to make one magical location.

For Relaxation

Blissfully set within the 85 private acres of Treangarriv, Lost Cottage is a world away from city life. White-washed minimalist interiors offer a stylishly simple shelter from the elements. Watching the morning sun awaken the valley from the master bed is simply awe-inspiring, whereas the seat beside the roaring log fire is the best for witnessing sideways rain, dramatic cloudscapes and moon shadows whip over Caragh lake. Home to some of Ireland’s most iconic scenery, friendliest folk and spirited trad music, County Kerry encompasses all that is great about this fair green isle.

There is ample parking outside the cottage. The simple kitchen has all the essentials including a dishwasher, oven, fridge and array of kitchen appliances to please smoothie lovers, soup aficionados and fondue fans. The washing machine and dryer are in the outhouse.

Our Take

Property Owner Brian says

Even when people born and raised in County Kerry first visit Treangarriv, they are taken aback by it´s beauty and find it hard to believe that it is so close yet so hidden. I was no different when I first visited Lost Cottage, it´s like it´s own little world.

Quinlan’s Fish in Killorglin is the best fish supplier in the area, along with Burkes Butchers which is located beside the church. Jack’s will be your go-to for freshly baked bread, artisan foods and delicious cheese – a perfect stop-by before heading off for a hike and a picnic.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

If you love seafood then you'll be well placed at Lost Cottage. Jack's of Cromane and The Point Seafood Bar (only serving local boat seafood) come highly recommended - think amazing views, fresh fish and cosy dining. For a unique evening of live music and Spanish food in a converted church, opt for Sol y Sombra, whilst Giovannelli is your go-to for Michelin recommended dining. If you only dine out once during your stay then Glencar House, although quiet, boasts a very special view back over Lost Cottage - a memory to keep forever.
