The Shipwreck | Luxury Self-Catering Beach Hut | Whitsand Bay

Built entirely from the washed-up timber of the marooned cargo ship Kodima, The Shipwreck celebrates the simplest pleasures in life; far-reaching views across the ocean, no sound to disturb other than the gentle roar of the waves and a true escape from the buzz of modern technology. A beach house in Cornwall’s forgotten corner where true luxury comes in the form of uninterrupted time spent together.

Luxury beach cabin, Whitsand Bay

Introduction

Perched above the sands of Portwrinkle Beach in Whitsand Bay, this luxury cabin is a haven of rustic joy and nautical paraphernalia, where the phone signal is weak but the connection to the elements never stronger. Spend days here moving slowly in line with the tide, watching the weather course across the changeable ocean and sinking into the gentle ebb and flow of life by the sea.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Whether running away for a romantic escape for two or a family holiday by the seaside, The Shipwreck has it all. The master bedroom, with sweeping views across the horizon from the king-size bed and a large chrome bath tub looking out across the south coast of Cornwall, is a dreamy hideaway for couples. Meanwhile, the cosy bunk room will delight children, conjuring bedtime tales of pirates and adventurous stowaways in search of treasure. There is one family shower room with WC, shared by both bedrooms.

Outside

Surrounded by wild flora and sun drenched decking above the quiet sands of Portwrinkle beach, The Shipwreck offers serene seclusion from the wider world. Swing life away on the hanging chair with a cool gin and tonic in hand as the sea crashes below and watch the coast twinkle with lights as night descends from the comfort of the al fresco dining area. For those who just can’t bear to stand still, chase waves and forage for mussels right below the cabin.

For Relaxation

Relaxation and The Shipwreck go hand in hand; wake to the sight of the sun colouring the sky a kaleidoscope of pinks from the comfort of the master bed before heading down the cliff to enjoy a morning dip and picnic breakfast of soft croissants, sweet raspberry jam and steaming coffee on the deserted beach. After, don walking boots and head out onto the South West Coast Path, just above the cabin, to explore the secret coves and gentle shores of Whitsand Bay.

Practicalities

There is private parking for two cars. The bespoke kitchen includes a fan oven, induction hob, dishwasher, fridge with small freezer drawer, microwave and washer-dryer.

Our Take

Property Owners Rob and Jo say

There are so many things to love about The Shipwreck; the breathtaking views and changing skies, the privacy, peace and overwhelming tranquillity. Our favourite way to spend a night here is to sit with a glass of wine, listening to the sea lapping shore or crashing against the cliffs in a storm.

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

With sunsets as spectacular as those that can be witnessed on Whitsand Bay, it's likely that time spent toasting marshmallows on the chimenea will take favour over any dinner purchased in a bar or restaurant. Stock up on meat, veg and bubbles from the Purely Cornish Farm Shop and Deli in Looe and barbecue to your heart's content above the surf.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your family (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

If one really does feel the need to leave the tranquillity of The Shipwreck, the surrounding area is bursting with hidden eateries and bars. With views over Plymouth Sound and out to sea, The Canteen at Maker Heights serves delicious grub and a Sunday roast to write home about. For a more formal affair, Rock Salt just over the river in Plymouth creates sensational dishes from the finest local ingredients.
