Luxury self-catering modern home in Mousehole

Introduction

Descend from the higgledy-piggledy Mousehole lanes and enter a composed abode designed entirely with “the best views in the village” in mind. Pure lines and designer flourishes merge seamlessly with antique furniture collected from far-Eastern shores, while bright original paintings by local artists lovingly adorn the walls. Spend slow mornings at this luxury home watching dolphins play around St Clement's Island and nights wrapped in blankets on the terrace, the glow of St Michael’s Mount shining like a beacon across Mount's Bay.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With sunny terraces, sea views and cashmere-topped beds to fall into, both of Holanen's bedrooms offer peace and tranquility. The king-size master suite, with shower room, is the ideal retreat for lovebirds, while the super king-size zip-and-link at the opposite end of the house is great for both children and couples. There is one family bathroom with bath and shower over.

Outside

With a panoramic view sweeping from the bustling village, across the Lizard Peninsula and out to sea, time basking on Holanen's sun-drenched terrace with nothing in mind but where the next glass of wine is coming from is well spent. Banks of heady rosemary, swaying grasses and sea holly fill the tiered garden which tumbles to the sea, while pods of porpoises and a colony of seals play in the surf below.

For Relaxation

Armed with a backpack filled with all the necessary equipment to indulge in a clifftop cream tea, head out along the South West Coast Path to Lamorna Cove, a pretty group of former artists’ cottages at the foot of a beautiful wooded valley just a short ramble south. Come nightfall, set up camp in The Old Coastguard’s garden, sampling their creative menu and talking the night away by light of the stars.

Practicalities

There is parking for two cars at the front of the property in clearly marked spaces. The kitchen includes an oven, hob, fridge, freezer, washer-dryer and dishwasher. Please be mindful of the steep drops beyond the garden terraces and be careful when exploring; children are to be supervised at all times.

Our Take

Property Owners Nick and Tim say

Spectacular sunrises across the bay and hearing waves crash on the rocks below make living so close to the sea a real joy. Mousehole is a very special village and weīve made the house as unique as its extraordinary location.

Open Air Shows For those who love nothing more than a trip to the theatre, a show at The Minack should be high on the holiday agenda. This iconic open-air theatre is carved into the cliff-side, offering the most magical of backdrops for a range of seasonal performances. Nearby Penlee Park is a unique outdoor theatre space in the heart of Penzance and offers an enjoyable evening of alfresco entertainment for the entire family. Be sure to pack a blanket and a flask of tea for a cosy evening.

Beautiful, Naturally! There are nine areas of woodlands within the Penwith peninsula and the entire region has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are in fact 12 separate geographical AONBs covering nearly 1000 square miles in the county, and some of Cornwall’s mining landscape has been given UNESCO world heritage status.

Jubilee Outdoor Bathing Pool Swim safely and bathe in Cornwall’s fresh sea waters at this open-air lido, with an art-deco theme and 1930’s architecture this sea pool is certainly a showstopper. Pack a picnic and head to this notable lido for a sun-kissed family day out, where the salty sea air and beach front location evokes exotic vibes whatever the weather. (Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts are optional!).

Cultural Connection Ever since the railway brought visitors to Penzance in the nineteenth century, artists have flocked here for the famous “quality of the light”.  Enjoy Newlyn School paintings by artists like Stanhope Forbes and Lamorna Birch in Penlee House Museum, and contemporary work in the Exchange and Newlyn Galleries. Follow the Artists’ Trails in Lamorna Valley and Newlyn and see the original locations that inspired such creativity.

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

A stay in Mousehole just wouldn't be complete without a fish supper and, with Newlyn Harbour just a short drive (or walk if you're feeling energetic) away, there's no excuse not to fire up the barbecue and indulge in some freshly caught fish from The Strand. For sweet treats galore, it has to be Hole Foods Deli, where Porth Enys slices can be picked up and enjoyed with legs swinging over the harbour wall.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Mousehole has a wealth of eateries hidden between its twisty turvy streets, if only you know where to look! For an informal lunch overlooking the bay, the Rock Pool Cafe serves homemade food throughout the day in a beautifully reclaimed setting. For a more formal affair, 2, Fore Street offers an exceptional dining experience in the heart of the village; be sure to book.
