Self Catering rustic Cottage Rilla Mill Cornwall

Introduction

Hidden in a secluded pretty moorland village in Cornwall, Elysian sits on the fringe of Bodmin Moor between the ancient market towns of Launceston and Liskeard. The awe-inspiring moorland walks, evenings at the unique amphitheatre and dinner at the local gastro inn will be the only things to tear you away from the comfort of this luxury cottage with its rustic charm. Calming hues and character features combine with nature-inspired artwork and curio to ensure Elysian is perfectly in-keeping with its rural surroundings.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Climb the stairs to reach the first floor where original blackened floorboards, white stone walls and low beamed ceilings embrace Cornish cottage charm at its best. The bathroom has a fresh, vintage feel and the garden viewpoint means bird watching is even possible from under a bath full of bubbles! The master bedroom has a king-size bed with botanical headboard and deep feather duvet dressed in French linen, and the two double bedrooms are equally as sumptuous! Traditional hand-crafted windows let in the dawn chorus and streaming sunshine to coax you from dreamland in true fairytale fashion.

Outside

The pretty cottage garden just across the lane is fully enclosed and features a lawn bordered by fragrant beds and climbing rose trellis. The summerhouse provides a peaceful haven from which to observe the plethora of wildlife on the doorstep. Bodmin Moor's wild, rugged landscape is simply breath-taking. It's not uncommon to start a day’s adventure over the moorland to find never-ending panoramas of purple heather, highland cattle and grazing ponies.

For Relaxation

For ultimate peace and quiet, retreat up to the adjoining linhay - a real writer’s retreat designed to inspire one's inner creative. On balmy days, venture on foot from Elysian through woodland and past hidden caves and sparkling waterfalls to find a tranquil spot for a picnic. Enjoy an immersive and totally unique cultural experience at the open-air Moorland Theatre; located just 10 mins from the cottage. In winter, stock the shelves and cosy-up by the crackling fire with a large glass of burgundy. The warm Aga, soft sheepskins and vintage furnishings make this a home you won’t ever want to leave.

Our Take

Property Owner Cathryn says

Approaching via winding country lanes, I felt as if I’d entered a children’s book and stumbled across a magical moorland cottage. With its wooden floorboards, wonky walls and a warm Aga with whistling kettle sat atop; Elysian is brimming with enchantment and provides a real haven for relaxation.

Pull! Whether a total beginner or a more advanced shooter, enjoy an afternoon's clay pigeon shooting nearby at Lower Lake. As well as game shooters, skeet and sporting for clay shooters, there are a variety of high and low towers in the valley to enjoy.

Bodmin Moor, one of Cornwall's designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a remote, dramatic moorland still grazed by moorland ponies and highland cattle. Highest peaks, Rough Tor and the slightly taller Brown Willy, which reaches a height of 420 metres (1,377 ft) above sea level. More than a hundred Bronze Age hut circles have been excavated on the slopes of Rough Tor, along with a Neolithic Tor Enclosure and the foundations of a Medieval chapel. The wild and windswept 'high moor' is also home to Cornwall's highest church, located in the village of St Breward, starting point of the Camel Trail.

Head to the Coast A visit to the village of Boscastle and Tintagel is sure to cast a spell over you; from dramatic coastal walks to quaint bookshops and tea rooms, there is magic to be found in these pretty vilages. Beautiful Boscastle has also been used as a filming location for Doc Martin and Saving Grace, and has even starred in its very on television series A Seaside Parish. In October, don't miss the Boscastle Food festival. Pick up a copy of the local Parish paper The Boscastle Blowhole to get abreast of all the local goings-on!

Antiques For those inspired by the cottage's interiors or simply with a penchant for antiquities, the nearby town of Callington holds fortnightly auctions with viewing available on Wednesdays followed by the sale on alternate Thursday mornings.

National Trust Cotehele House nearby makes for a great day out. The Tudor house is festooned with tapestries, textiles, arms and armour to evoke the imaginations of all the family! Saltram House in Plymouth was home to the same family for nearly 300 years, and still displays the original contents providing a fascinating insight to country-estate life throughout the centuries.

On the Water Hire canoes for all the family from Cotehele Quay and experience the delight of gliding in a silent boat in some of the most beautiful scenery in the country; past steeply sloping woodland, old quays, mine chimneys, farms and boatyards. For those with a thirst for more high octane activities, nearby Siblyback Lake is the best place in Cornwall for wakeboarding, windsurfing, sailing and more.

Culture Vultures Sterts open air theatre is a short drive away and is a 'must visit' for those who are curious to experience a production under the stars. There is a bar, many events throughout the year, and you might even be lucky enough to visit when the BBQ is sizzling too!
