The Fourth Wall | Luxury Self-Catering Apartment | Covent Garden, London

The Fourth Wall

Covent Garden, London, UK

As close to time travel as one can possibly get, pushing through the plush, tie-back curtains of The Fourth Wall could very well be mistaken for a transportation into Victorian London. An extraordinary self-catering apartment in Covent Garden where the bizarre and wondrous rule over all, luxuriate in a time long forgotten high above the sparkling city.

Introduction

Bohemian in spirit and eccentric in soul, this unique London abode has taken inspiration from a smorgasbord of styles and tastes - art nouveau, Moroccan, vintage and Turkish to name just a few. Reclaimed and salvaged down to the very last detail, The Fourth Wall gets curiouser and curiouser with every moment spent between its eclectic walls. Originally built in the late 1800s to house workers during the development of Covent Garden’s Theatreland, this peculiar self-catering apartment has evolved from humble dwelling to flourishing residence; a rare butterfly emerged from its silken cocoon after a long winter of hibernation.

Inside

Deep reds and cerulean blues line the floors, while artefacts from local stage sets surprise from shelves and mantlepieces, walls and bureaus. The master double bedroom reveals itself through the drapes of the open-plan living area’s proscenium arch, while the single bedroom flaunts a deep clawfoot bath tub, perfect for soaking in after days pounding the pavements and nights frequenting the rambunctious taverns of nearby Soho. Collected worldly elements adorn each fascinating room, giving a feeling of delving into an illusionist’s bag of tricks who once graced the stages of the surrounding area.

Outside

With its street performers and buskers, Covent Garden is undeniably a lively place to while away a sunny afternoon in London, but the city really comes into its own in neighbouring Soho. Here, bistros spill onto streets, rooftop restaurants smoke with enticing smells and an ever-changing beat reverberates into an atmosphere where one can almost touch the excitement. Of course, London isn’t all vivacious bar hopping and electric spirits, and peace can so often be found under a weeping willow in one of the city’s great parks; watching the pelicans of St James’s, artisan coffee in hand, is an unexpected experience amidst the bustle.

From the owner

“The apartment is very special, quite unlike the average homestay, and I hope you will fall in love with the quirks and abundant character of which The Fourth Wall is renowned for.”

From the owner

The renovation of The Fourth Wall began during the 1970s when the property was purchased by an eccentric restaurateur, who was responsible for the foundations of the apartment's quirky interior.

Local artisans were employed to install the wooden panelling and some of the architectural features, but for one reason or another, the project came to a halt and remained unfinished for several decades until more recently, when I took over ownership, and continued the renovation of the apartment.

The interior has been constructed entirely of reclaimed materials, architectural salvage and artefacts, most of which were details from stage sets, acquired courtesy of the local theatres.

I have no doubt you will have a memorable stay with the very centre of the most exciting city in the world as your backdrop. Here, the possibilities are endless and there are very few excuses to stay indoors, however tempting that may be.
