Discovered by chance while hiking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Little Cannon is a quirky and romantic retreat just a hop, skip and a jump from golden Poppit Sands. Once a storehouse for lifesaving rocket equipment and a gigantic cannon which rolled to the clifftops, this Grade-II listed cottage in southwest Wales is a little piece of living history with character by the bucketload.

Luxury self-catering coastal cottage in Pembrokeshire, Wales

With a colourful past of hoisting sailors from shipwrecks by rocket off the rugged Cardigan Bar, Little Cannon is a luxury coastal cottage where clean lines, natural materials and reclaimed furnishings make for a cosy retreat on the edge of the world. Sweeping ocean vistas command the views from the garden and bedroom, while blossoming fruit trees create a dappled spot in which to kick back with a paperback and gin and tonic on spring afternoons. Inside, a mix of mid-century furniture and antiques combine to create a home which comforts and inspires in equal measure.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

White-washed clapperboard and nautical regalia reign in Little Cannon’s king-size bedroom, where long, lazy lie-ins over steaming mugs of coffee and the sea crashing in the distance allow for peaceful rest and rejuvenation. The large groundfloor bathroom, with bath and overhead shower, is a calming sanctuary in which to rinse off sandy toes and salty hair from a day on one of Pembrokeshire's gorgeous beaches.

Private and with an abundance of unusual flora and fauna, Little Cannon’s sunny garden flaunts unrivalled seascapes from every angle. Throw open the doors of the kitchen-dining area and spread out onto the large, sun-drenched patio for slow breakfasts and balmy summer dining as the sun melts into the horizon, before sharing a bottle of rich Pinot Noir by moonlight beneath the apple trees. On stormy afternoons, snuggle down on squishy armchairs in the secret summer house, watching the clouds rage across the sky.

For Relaxation

Armed with backpacks filled with sweet treats and with hiking boots strapped to feet, head straight out of the enormous front door and onto the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. From here, some of Wales’ most spectacular coastal hikes can be accessed while pods of porpoises and dolphins can often be seen playing in the surf. For those who prefer to spend their days more sedately, laze in the late summer sunshine on Poppit Sands, which can be seen from every window.

There is private parking for up to three cars on the driveway. The well-equipped kitchen is fitted with a Smeg induction range cooker, dishwasher and fridge with freezer box. Due to some steep and irregular steps, please take care in the garden.

Our Take

Property Owners Cari and Duncan say

The views over undulating countryside and across the sea to Cardigan Island are just spellbinding, particularly at dusk when the sun dips below the horizon and you hear nothing but birdsong and breaking waves. By day, keep eyes peeled for distant dolphins playing in the waves.

The beach itself is wide and sandy, with a café and lifeguards on duty throughout the summer holidays; great for the whole family!

National Botanic Garden of Wales Although almost 40 miles away, these gardens in Llanarthne are worth every second of journeying for keen horticulturists. Themed gardens, a tropical butterfly house and courses to inspire and encourage sustainable gardening will enthuse all who visit.

If music be the food of love, play on! Head just three miles from Little Cannon to St Dogmaels and enjoy a night of Shakespeare under the stars in the ruins of a 12th century Abbey. A truly memorable experience and one not be missed, be sure to book in advance to ensure the best seats in the house!

Hike, Hike Baby With the Pembrokeshire Coast Path running right in front of the cottage, a day spent stomping across the cliffs is an absolute must. Circumnavigate Cemaes Head, spot seals sunbathing on baked rocks and sprawl between the wildflowers as the clouds gently move across the sky and sea crashes below.

Take a trip to St Dogmaels Local Producers Market on a Tuesday morning and load up on some of the best organic produce in the whole of Wales. From delicious deli treats to locally reared joints of lamb, visitors are sure to leave laden with goodies. The crème de la crème of the market has to be the warm, fresh bread which is baked with flour from a mill less than 50 yards away - the perfect accompaniment to an al fresco breakfast!

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your loved one (on prior request and at an additional cost).

Eating Out

There are a wealth of cafes and bistros all within arm's reach of Little Cannon and in the Cardigan area, but for open fires, good vibes and a relaxed dining experience, there is no finer place for an evening under the setting sun than Pizza Tipi, just three miles away from the cottage on the banks of the river Teifi.
