Luxury self-catering accommodation in Malpas
Not far from the Welsh border, this historical village is all chocolate-box charm with its almhouses, little shops and old pubs.
Tucked into the south Cheshire countryside not far from Wrexham, the black-and-white timbered frames that make up this village give the place an olde-world feeling, and there are plenty of old inns with stories of yesteryear. At the Red Lion, a famous three-legged chair said to have been used by James I has now been hidden away; bar stools and pub seats remain for those enjoying a quiet pint. In town are signs of Victorian, Georgian and Tudor architecture; some of the modern houses have even been built to style.
The present majestic church dates back to the 14th century and itself retains several well-preserved artefacts. Nearby Cholmondeley Castle has extensive grounds for children wanting a runaround or flower-spotting horticulturalists. Time your trip for an event in the grounds – musical concerts, picnics and horse trials take place all year round. In the other direction, step back in time at Stretton Watermill, with its sleepy setting and working wheel. Open during high season, there's a shop and picnic area once you've had a good look round.
