Vanbrugh Designed Castle Folly

Vanbrugh Designed Castle Folly

Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK

Coming soon...

Hidden within the grounds of one of England’s greatest country houses, this whimsical folly in Lincolnshire hides a treasure trove of joy. Frescoes of a life well-lived adorn the walls and ceilings (just wait until you spot the cat!) and an abundance of pattern and colour await through every door. Grownup, flirtatious and with a sprinkle of giddiness, this unique luxury self-catering home is not to be missed.

A unique escape sleeping up to four guests in two bedrooms, take up residence in one of Lincolnshire’s finest country estates. The final creation of architect Sir John Vanbrugh in the 1720s (who also built Blenheim Castle), this luxury self-catering home in the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle is a curious retreat. Beginning life as the castle’s summerhouse, hosting picnics and parties for visitors, to housing estate workers and even an anti-aircraft battery during the Second World War, this folly has had a colourful history.

Now, its stone exterior hides joyful patterns and unanticipated bursts of sunshine yellow, chequered tiles and intricate iron beds. Outside, a flower garden overflowing with ditsy blooms and bobbing flowerheads fills the air with headily scents and agapanthus in terracotta pots. Beyond the walled garden, the 3,000 acres of private estate is yours for the taking; lounge in the kitchen garden with a book and flask of tea, or roam the wider park with eyes on the sky, keeping watch for buzzards, red kites and migrating geese.
