Luxury self-catering home near Lewes with a hot tub

Style meets stile at Hummingbird House, not far from the beautiful market town of Lewes in the heart of rural Sussex. Stepping through the huge gates and into the grounds of this extraordinary listed Wealden farmhouse will send shivers of anticipation down your spine. The 17th century carved wooden porch leads through into a luxurious self-catering abode where carefully placed colour, texture and light sits in harmony with the heavy wooden beams and hand-carved oak throughout. This historic self-catering home is named in homage to Lily Elsie (the most photographed woman of Edwardian times) who lived in Hummingbird House and once played a character of the same name.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Each of the four bedrooms radiate grown-up sophistication where luxurious linens, plump duvets and cloudsoft pillows abound. The master super king-size bedroom on the first floor has an en suite shower room and a Smart TV, whilst the other en suite bedroom features a super king zip-and-link with en suite steam and shower room. There is a sweet single room in the attic, reached by a staircase, which provides the perfect hideaway for storybooks and midnight feasts. The king-size double on the first floor and the single attic bedroom share a family bathroom with roll-top bath and hand-held shower.

This exquisite private home near Lewes is steeped in nature and the expansive gardens are completely bewitching, especially when spring is in full thrust. The carefully chosen interiors reflect the bountiful natural beauty surrounding Hummingbird House; the arboretum and landscaped gardens comprise two acres and revel in tranquility within the heart of the Sussex countryside. The lucky among you might hear Mr Woodpecker, spot the shy deer or iridescent dragonflies skitting beside the Koi pond. Grown-ups will enjoy evenings sat out on the private terraces enjoying some long-awaited relaxation, whilst little ones will spend long summer afternoons playing make-believe in the treehouse before being reluctantly called in for supper.

For Relaxation

If you can drag yourself away from Hummingbird House and its bubbly hot tub, the medieval streets, old English churches and tiny twittens (a Sussex word for alleyway) of Lewes offers a mixture of the unusual and intriguing which is so typically Sussex. This corner of England is home to medieval villages, rolling countryside and gorgeous coastlines so it's easy to see why it's such a hit with Londoners in the know. After a day exploring the local area, returning to your luxury home stay and curling up alongside the inglenook fireplace with a glass of burgundy in one hand and a compelling novel in the other will be nothing short of magnificent.

There is parking for up to three cars. This well-equipped luxury home has a four-oven Aga, ceramic hob, dishwasher, microwave and an American-style fridge freezer with ice machine. The washing machine and tumble dryer are in the utility room. The Aga will be off through July, August and September.

Our Take

Property Owner Charlotte says

Enjoy morning tea on the sunny front terrace and afternoon tea in the gazebo, warming yourselves by the Aga after a long day tramping in the countryside… there is so much to look forward to. The yellow bedroom is well positioned for hearing the pair of tawny owls at night and waking to bird song.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Lewes, East Sussex to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Lewes Although surrounded by chalk cliffs, the townscape of nearby Lewes is dominated by the remains of a Norman castle and is also home to the handsome townhouse of Anne of Cleves (fourth wife of King Henry Vlll). Lewes also claims host to numerous contemporary art galleries and historic and special interest sites including the once mighty Priory of St. Pancras - a casualty of the dissolution of the monasteries.

Glyndebourne Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is a world-renowned opera house hosting a uniquely English opera festival May-August where open air opera, black tie costume and high tea picnics creates the most genteel of occasions. © Glyndebourne Productions Ltd

Pooh Bear Woods Nearby Ashdown Woods is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its heathland is classified as rare habitat. Great for walks, abundant with deer (once hunted by Henry VIII) and home to Winnie the Pooh - you can even visit the original 'Pooh Sticks' bridge.

Homes and Gardens There are many beautiful National Trust houses and ornamental gardens close to Hummingbird House. Batemans is a beautiful Jacobean house with stunning gardens located in the picturesque village of Burwash. It was home to Rudyard Kipling for 34 years and much of his writing was done there. Charleston Farmhouse is the Sussex home to members of the 'Bloomsbury set' (artists, intellectuals and writers famous in the early part of the 20th century) and their innovative style and intriguing décor still remains throughout the house. Well worth a visit.

Camber Sands Just 30 miles away, lying East of the popular town of Rye, is the golden stretch beach known as Camber Sands. This gorgeous beach is the only sand dune system in East Sussex and will provide the setting for a good old fashioned day at the seaside.

The country-style kitchen-diner gives a nod to the retro fifties style with its cheerful colourway and feature flexed pendant lights. Sunday lunches have never tasted so good as when cooked on the large traditional four oven Aga, or stock up on delicious artisan breads and farmhouse cheeses for a long lazy summer picnic in one of the surrounding pretty villages. Don't miss Lewes farmer's market on the first Saturday of the month!

In-House Cuisine

If you’d rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

There's no shortage of delicious restaurants and cafes when staying at Hummingbird House; Bodiam is not far away and is the home of delicious popular eatery The Curlew (voted Sussex's Best Dining Experience three years running). The Blackboys Inn is a 14th century former coaching inn and the owners' favourite local watering hole with all the character you expect from an old English pub.
