Luxury self-catering accommodation in Shropshire

Tucked beside Wales and bound on all sides by rolling countryside, this verdant county is a draw for walkers, cyclists and dreamers seeking escape.

Medieval towns, hints of the Industrial Revolution, foodie capitals and miles of gorgeous scenery; Shropshire's varied contents invites a wide range of visitor. Hire a big farmhouse in the south-western corner to experience long rambles along the Welsh border, studying the map to find quirky names that give clues to the area's ancient past; The Bog, Diddlebury, Clunton and Nordy Bank all sound like locations in a Tolkien story. Brown Clee is the highest hill in Shropshire, and many climbers scale the ascent on paths dating back to the Iron Age and beyond.

Ludlow is a good start for a historical overview, a beautiful town with an 11th century castle, black and white timbered houses, and well-preserved parts of the ancient town wall. Market Drayton, known for its gingerbread, has a huge weekly street market and stunning red-brick buildings. Over in Shrewsbury, shops are still housed in iconic Tudor buildings down streets with more olde-world names; Dogpole, Grope Lane, Mardol. Ironbridge does just what it says on the tin, and stands as a beautiful reminder of the heavy industry for which the county is known.
