Sandwich Bay

All Destinations UK Kent Sandwich Bay

This Kent coast sweep of shingle is a village as well as a bay, with pubs, cafés and a couple of weekly markets for bargain-hunters.

On Kent's far eastern coastline, this long stretch of beach provides dog-walkers with miles of exercise, as windy north sea waves crash onto the shingle sands. Halfway between the major coastal towns of Margate and Dover, the Bay makes a good stop-off for those escaping the usual donkey rides and amusement arcades, though there are fun activities to be found in town for children wanting just that, best seen by local tours of the medieval town. There's a 17th century windmill that visitors can explore, perfect for photo opportunities of white clapboard against blue sky. Or hop on a river bus for seal and wildlife spotting from Sandwich to the Roman fort at Richborough itself well worth a visit, traces of 1st century wooden buildings still on show. If ice creams and hot dogs are more your thing, Ramsgate is just at the northernmost end of the bay, and to maximise the enjoyment, visits can be coordinated to time with one of the annual events, like the Bucket and Spade Run, Battles for Victory or Addington Street Fair, all packing plenty of fun into your weekend visit.
