Luxury self-catering in Bampton, the Lake District

Approaching this unique waterside home via its sweeping mountain road, you could almost think you’d been led to the elaborate hideout of a Bond villain’s lair on arrival at Aquila. The interiors incorporate steel beams, concrete ceilings and smoked oak floors which give the luxury self-catering retreat a cool, contemporary vibe. In contrast, the gardens have been landscaped to merge seamlessly into the panorama of fells and mountains beyond. The Mardale Valley is a serene space for unwinding, set within one of the most peaceful and beautiful nooks of the Lake District.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

At 30 square metres, the lofty master room has a king-size bed and industrial-style en suite shower room bedecked with Italian ceramics, discrete spotlighting and shower big enough for two - making it quite the honeymoon suite! The double bedroom is a magical space in which to wake up to the mountain vistas, whilst the twin bedroom has beautiful views of the lake which are sure to inspire sleepy children as they drift off to sleep. Alongside the bedrooms on the first floor there's a family bathroom that's perfect for soaking weary limbs following a day spent in the great outdoors.

With Haweswater reservoir below, guests have the luxury of a stunning 100 square mile wildlife haven right on the doorstep. Until recently, Haweswater was famously home of England’s only Golden Eagle and, with the magnificent display of birdlife all year-round, the reserve is a twitchers’ paradise. Further afield, the local area provides a playground for outdoor activities; motorboat across Lake Ullswater, take a 4x4 over the rocky hairpins of Gatescarth, plunge into Askham’s 20 metre outdoor swimming pool or climb the highest peaks in Cumbria’s Eastern Fells to reach its soaring summits - in true 007-style.

For Relaxation

As put by the grand old bard of the lakes, there is 'nowhere in so narrow a compass with such a variety of the sublime and beautiful'. Follow in the footsteps of Wordsworth and others inspired by the beauty of this mountainous national park ever since the Romantic poets arrived in the 19th century. Why not put ink to paper and capture your own poetic musings as a special reminder of your luxury Lakeland escape? In summertime, look forward to wild swimming and al fresco garden barbecues. And when winter falls, follow glittery, frosted walking paths to find dramatic lookout spots all to yourself. Walk up to The Haweswater to enjoy hot toddies in the cool Art Deco bar, before family movie nights back at Aquila.

Parking is on the private driveway, accommodating up to four cars. This modern homestay benefits from an electric oven, dishwasher, washer-dryer and fridge-freezer. The property is just a few metres from Haweswater and is fenced from the south side.

Our Take

Property Owner Stephen says

Staying at Aquila is summed up by a single word: view. Aquila perches on the edge of Hawswater, with views south and west towards Kidsty Pike and High Street. There are no houses to spoil your view; no boats to spoil the peace. Just you, the water, bird life and mountains. Paradise.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Bampton, Cumbria to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Village Life at Bampton This sweet Cumbrian village sits in the Eastern Fells of the Lake District and offers a warm welcome to its visitors. From yoga classes to church meetings, nature walks and paper sculpture workshops, the Parish calendar is a reflection of this close-knit and creative community. Get involved and feel like one of the locals!

High Street Not your 'average' high street, Cumbria's 'High Street' is the name of the highest peak in the Eastern Fells. This mountain gets its unusual name from the Roman road that once ran across the ridge. Some of the best views in Cumbria are to be had on this walk, especially passing Small Water and Blea Water on your way. The best thing? High Street can be hiked from Aquila's front door!

My Little Pony Down at Pooley Bridge you'll find Park Foot Pony Trekking. Established over 30 years ago, this equestrian club is great for children and takes riders on a magical adventure straight onto the fells above Ullswater, avoiding any roads. Riding hats are provided along with waterproofs should they be needed (rain doesn't stop play here!).

On Yer Boat Head to the river mouth on Eusemere Pooley Bridge and hire canoes to sail across Ullswater, the nearest lake to Haweswater less than ten miles away. For the more adventurous, there are also motorboats for hire.

On the Literary Trail No visit to the Lake District is complete without a visit to the the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction complete with Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin and all the gang. Look out for Mr McGregor! Fans of the Swallows and Amazons stories will enjoy taking a boat cruise around the places surrounding Coniston Water which Arthur Ransome used to populate the imaginary lake of his books, including Wild Cat Island.

Al Fresco Swimming Askham's two outdoor swimming pools make for a great day out for all the family. With a heated paddling pool for the young and a larger 20 metre pool for the young at heart, both are lifeguarded and surrounded by grassy lawns perfect for post-swim picnics. Also on offer is tea, coffee, sweets and ice creams - what more could children wish for?

The modern open-plan kitchen is a smart space for cooking up a storm. Two miles away, Bampton Village Stores is a quintessential general stores packed with all the necessities, whilst Penrith (12 miles away) has a fantastic butchers priding itself on choice cuts of Cumbrian meat and a delightful 'olde worlde' family-run grocers selling bread, cheese, pies, cakes, sandwiches and much more.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

For a pub offering a warm welcome, head to Bampton's Crown and Mitre or the Punchbowl Inn at Askham. Also worth a visit is the George and Dragon at Clifton, a high-spec country estate inn with a relaxed 'gastro' vibe. If you want to take the party to a smart country house, Askham hall near Penrith is a superb option, offering fine dining with food sourced mainly from the nearby Lowther Estate.
