Stargazer; luxury self-catering in South Devon for families

Surrounded by rolling hills, wooded glades and winding country lanes, the bustling town of Modbury in South Devon has a vibrant independent feel where artists, creatives and local producers thrive. Stargazer is positioned along a quiet road at the top of the hill leading out of the town, a self-catering home stay with swimming pool benefiting from far-reaching views across the valley from the back garden which is the perfect spot for stargazing and sundowners.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

There are three beautiful double bedrooms and a characterful twin room; the master king-size bedroom has a spacious en suite bathroom with bath, separate shower and jack-and-jill sinks, whilst the second king-size bedroom has an en suite shower room with walk-in shower. There is also a ground floor shower room. The additional double bedroom and twin room share a family bathroom with a bath tub. Each bedroom is furnished beautifully with striking artwork providing added interest for the eye and luxury linens promising a blissful slumber until morn.

The quirky-shaped pool (open from the first May bank holiday until September) and outdoor relaxation area will be a favourite spot for sunbathing and catching up on that reading list in summer months, whilst little ones will enjoy playing garden games on the lawn before reluctantly being called in for supper. After a day combing the shores of nearby Mothecombe or Wonwell beaches, retire to the patio area with your coastal 'treasures' and begin a scrap book of your perfect Devonshire holiday to be remembered for years to come.

For Relaxation

The rugged tors and shaggy-haired ponies of Dartmoor are not far from Stargazer, so don't forget to pack the walking boots and enjoy some exploration in 'the wilds' of South Devon. It's just a short walk down the hill into Modbury with its welcoming pubs and friendly cafes, whilst nearby Bantham, Mothecombe and Wembury are a short drive away and perfect for those who have always wanted to try their hand at 'hanging ten' on the crest of the waves!

There is parking for two cars in the garage and additional cars can park on the residential street. The stylish modern kitchen is fully-equipped with oven, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. The washing machine and tumble dryer are located in the utility room. Please note that the pool can take longer to heat up depending on the temperature outside.

Our Take

Property Owner Genesta says

After a day at the beach we like nothing better than returning home to sit by the pool with a glass of something cold and refreshing. Later we love sitting in the summerhouse watching the sunset over the spire while very amateur games of croquet take place.

Buckets and Spades You are spoiled for choice in the South Hams, which is famous for its beautiful, diverse, award-winning beaches that stretch from the River Dart to Wembury.

For Little Ones Paignton Zoo is approximately one hour from the property, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is just half an hour away, while Woodlands Leisure Park, with its watercoasters and toboggan run, is just 20 minutes away.

Green Interestingly to the eco-friendly among you, the town of Modbury is the world's first 'plastic bag free' town! So ensure you bring your cotton shoppers and wicker baskets if popping in to town for some groceries...

Don Your Walking Boots The South West Coastal Path runs for almost 60 miles through the area, with some great eateries en route. Dartmoor National Park is only a 30 minute drive away so don't forget your walking boots.

Take to the Water Take a boat trip on the River Dart from Totnes to Dartmouth, or take to the waves with a surf lesson at Bantham. Discovery Surf School are a local family-run surf school who teach all levels of surfing, stand up paddle boarding and coasteering depending on requirements.

Festivals and Markets Modbury has a May Fair (early May) with a big artisan market and a charming parade through the town. Plymouth Food Festival and World Firework Championships are held every August and well worth a visit. The nearby yacht-y towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe have big regatta weeks with lots of entertainment such as sandcastle building competitions and Red Arrow flypasts. Nearby Totnes, Kingsbridge and Yealmpton have good agricultural shows and weekly markets in summertime and make for a great day out.

Without doubt the heart of the home, the whole family can get involved in whipping up a storm in the contemporary kitchen where you'll find a combi oven and all mod cons. Fling open the doors of the open-plan kitchen-diner which lead directly onto the decking for al fresco suppers and light lunches in the sunshine.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

There are several welcoming inns down the hill in Modbury itself serving up traditional pub grub- a 5 minute walk (perhaps a little more on the way back up!). Salcombe is just 15 minutes away where you will find plenty of eateries and fine dining opportunities among the sailing fraternity who favour this sailing Mecca . The New Angel, Dartmouth, is around half an hour from the house and highly recommended.
