Introduction

The Pandy House was built with eccentricity in its bones. The house was once a fulling mill used to cleanse the wool of the sheep that pepper the surrounding mountains and later the home of a stamp collector, his hundreds of stamps purportedly lost in a house fire and last seen billowing out of the chimney like confetti over the hills. In its latest reinvention as a self-catering holiday home, a local family have poured love and creativity into every nook and cranny, daring to go beyond the realms of any interior designer. Encompassing the very essence of Snowdonia, The Pandy House is as elaborate as the valleys, forests, coastline and rivers that  surround it.

Inside

Setting the theme from the outset, psychedelic William Morris wallpaper meets dazzling emerald wall tiles and parquet flooring in the entrance hall, where a vintage luggage trolley invites guests to drop bags at the door and explore. Pull up a bar stool by the kitchen's crittal glass feature wall and admire the swirling mists over Tal y Fan peak, or peruse the artwork of the mysterious Van Cuckoo. Up the stairs and you’ll discover five gloriously eccentric bedrooms. Swans, fish, zebras and birds all dance across the walls, while bumble bee accents nod to the owner’s Mancunian roots and bold florals echo the gardens in summer.

Outside

While undeniably flamboyant, The Pandy House's soul is one of peace. Encircled by a trickling river and backed by woodland protected by Snowdonia National Park, the grounds are a private oasis cut off from the village by a gated drive. Loungers set beneath a sail canopy invite slow weekends entangled in sunbeams, while the summerhouse is armed with arcade games and beanbags for rainy days. Wild swimmers can take a bracing dip in the river and reward themselves with post-swim s’mores around the fire pit. After dark, recline in the hot tub and bask in the glow of the swaying festoon lights as the sun dips behind the mountains. There's no end to the magic.

From the owner

“Our family purchased The Pandy House in a bid to preserve a building we fell in love with when we moved to the village in 2013. We believe it sat and waited for us and we hope that we have shown it the respect it deserves in our renovation.”

From the owner

The Pandy House was an old Welsh wool fulling mill built of local stone from Pen quarry, converted into living accommodation 100 years later in around the 1930s. From the medieval period, the fulling of cloth often was undertaken in a water mill known as a walk or tuck mill or, in Wales, a pandy.

In the cellars of the property there are the small living areas where the workers would have lived. Each has its own tiny fire are there are still some intricate wood carvings that were likely made by the workers.

As a family we bought the house having fallen in love with it when we moved to Rowen. There was a romance crossing the bridge over the Afon Roe to access it, the constant sound of the river and the birds, the privacy of the building nestled in the overgrown gardens. The neglect of the property meant we could put our personalities and ideas into the design to bring the house back to life. It felt like a rescue mission.

The themes were all very much inspired by the flowers and fauna of Snowdonia National Park and the association with Conwy's nautical heritage. We wanted everything to have the same level of attention to detail whether that be a door handle or a shower head.
