Just south of Newquay on Cornwall's golden north coast, this charming coastal village has rural beauty, fabulous sands and stunning cliff walks.

Surfers, families with buckets and spades, couples wanting a day on the sands all unload the boot at Crantock car park and head for the beach rollers, because this is surf-land, just south of Newquay's famed Fistral Beach, and the swells crashing in and out of Crantock Bay do the area justice. Take the smalls for a paddle in the shallows, then settle in the dunes for a picnic with a view of the waves crashing in and out; the town also has a pub and café if seating is preferred.

The River Gannel’s salt marshes and waters are home to an abundance of wildlife and plants; look out for sightings of little egrets as well as trout, eels and bullhead in the waters. A walk along the bank gives historians the glimpse of old boatyards and moorings; take the circular route from Crantock Beach and back around again, passing through fields, woods, a holy well, a couple of pubs and child-favourite Trenance Gardens, with its playgrounds and parks.
