Luxury self-catering home in Schull, West Cork, Ireland

Introduction

Meticulously designed by award-winning architect Niall McLaughlin, this unique self-catering home in Schull was crafted from poured concrete and clad entirely in Irish Kilkenny Limestone, fusing modern architecture with minimalist style. Floor to ceiling glass allows the landscape to echo throughout the interior, exhibiting south facing views over Roaringwater Bay and its collection of islands. Together with the Aga and underfloor heating, a glowing double-sided fire ensures Skyros is as cosy as it is contemporary.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

This luxury single-storey home has a vast internal volume, with high ceilings and pared-back interiors allowing all the family to sprawl out and relax. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with out-of-this-world views, whilst the twin and single share a family bathroom with bath and shower. The second double bedroom has a private shower and is separated from the main living space by a secret door.

Outside

The garden is intentionally simple, bringing no competition to the house design nor the view. Pull up a sun lounger and enjoy the sea life as you gaze over to Cape Clear, Long Island and the iconic Fastnet Lighthouse - standing 146 foot tall with a beam range spanning 27 miles. For a scenic drive, take "the long way round" (or the N17 if you're following a map!) and wend past the pretty Irish villages, ancient stone circles and scattering of fine sandy beaches that mark the meandering coastal route from Cork to Killarney.

For Relaxation

The lively fishing village of Schull is a hotspot for yachting and creative types, but the landscape makes it just as idyllic for those simply wanting to kick back and soak up the scenery. Take a trip to Dunlough's Three Castle Head; it's a tough hike but these precariously positioned Norman dwellings are a sight not to be missed. Whether road-tripping the Wild Atlantic Way, playing on the open sea or stargazing from beside the fire in the sitting room; embrace the elements and let nature set the pace of your holiday here.

Practicalities

Skyros has an ample amount of private parking for three cars. The kitchen boasts two full size fridges, a freezer, electric Aga, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and much, much more. A seventh guest can stay for an additional fee of £100.

Our Take

Property Owners Lyons & Nicci say

Skyros gives us an enormous surprise every time we drive up the lane as it suddenly appears. The house gives the feeling of being outside, whilst being cosy and warm inside, due to the ceiling height, floor to ceiling windows and room shapes. We love the view of the islands from the living room!

Mountain Peaks The traditionally Irish town of Schull sits within the shadow of Mount Gabriel, the highest mountain in the area. Standing at 1,335 feet tall, a hike to the summit rewards walkers with stunning panoramic views stretching for miles. Be sure to keep eyes peeled for evidence of Bronze Age copper mining activity, with sites found on the southern and eastern slopes.

On The Water Activities Schull is a hive of activity for watersports and it’s no wonder, due to the town hosting the annual Calves week sailing races and the world-famous 700 mile Cowes-Fastnet-Plymouth race passing just offshore. Wander down to Fastnet Outdoor Education Centre and learn how to sail in the sheltered waters of Roaringwater Bay or hire a skipper and head to Middle Calf island in search of its secret golden beaches.

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

The open-plan layout ensures meal times are a social affair, offering the perfect sphere for the party to gather and tuck into delicious Irish produce. Head to family-run supermarket Fields (referred to as “The Harrods Food Hall of West Cork”!) or visit Schull's Country Market on Sundays for a smorgasbord of meats, cheeses and homemade pies, beautifully presented by the people who made them.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

The traditionally Irish Hackett's Bar is just a short walk away; serving up wholesome pub grub and putting on cheery nights of great live music. For a special evening, dine at Blairscove Restaurant on the picturesque inlet of Dunmanus Bay. The menu here boasts the best of Irish produce and has a mouth-watering selection of desserts (best enjoyed with an Irish coffee, of course).
