Luxury self-catering accommodation in Downderry

On the south coast of Cornwall, right at the top just before the Devon border, this unspoilt coastal village has cliffside houses looking out to sea, a sweep of sand and shingle beach, and plenty of rockpools for little explorers.

Roll up your trousers and unpack the net, this beach is rockpool heaven at low tide. Older children will love the story of the Gipsy wreck, sunk in 1901 while bound from Chile to Plymouth, leaving fragments of boat in these waters. A short drive down the coast is Looe's Monkey Sanctuary, home to rescued primates, with a garden and play area for your own little monkeys. To the east is the fishing village of Portwrinkle, where fish and chips make a delicious treat and a well-earned reward for the hearty cliff stomp if you choose to follow the coast path around.

From the cliff's vantage point there are brilliant views, and the occasional glimpse of the Eddystone lighthouse if you carry binoculars; also seal and dolphin sightings at certain times of year. Further away, the stately home of Mount Edgcumbe House and Gardens has acres of parkland and grounds, and it also happens to be the home of Adventure Segway. Hire an all-terrain vehicle and you can explore the estate a different way! The variety of different tracks allows riders to choose routes up and down hills or through thickly wooded byways.
