The Botanist | Luxury Coastal Self-Catering | Fowey, Cornwall

The Botanist

Fowey, Cornwall, UK

Just a 20-minute stroll from the heart of Fowey, The Botanist is wonderfully placed for exploring all that the leafy south coast of Cornwall has to offer. Inside, rich jewelled tones, soft velvets and bright botanical patterns reign while the extensive gardens offer a quiet place to lounge between the trees. A luxury self-catering coastal home with warmth and zing in abundance; Cornish holidays by the sea will never be the same again.

Introduction

Hidden behind trees and shrouded in peace and quiet, this self-catering coastal home was designed with family get-togethers in mind. By day, stroll into Fowey to enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty on the harbour wall before returning to The Botanist to recline under the willow tree with a good book and glass of something chilled. As the sun begins to fade, continue life outside at the summer house where a sunken hot tub hides behind greenery, or choose from any of Fowey’s chic bistros for the finest combination of fresh seafood and cold Champagne.

Inside

Emerging from underneath the marshmallow duvets of one of the six bedrooms after a dreamy night’s sleep, every day at The Botanist feels like a revival. Tiptoe down to the elegant kitchen to prepare leisurely breakfasts of fresh pastries and juicy fruit, enjoyed either around the dining table or outside under the morning sun. Veer off to get ready for a day’s adventure, and upon return, soak tired legs in a freestanding bathtub. Once towelled off and suitably relaxed, the lounge with its plump sofas is the perfect space for socialising.

Outside

A symphony of colour and scent awaits as the doors are flung open to the walled garden on early spring mornings. Enjoy hot, buttered croissants on the al fresco dining area next to the tinkling sound of water, perch under the Victorian ironwork with a cup of tea on the front porch or challenge the family to a game of croquet on the field in front of the hot tub. Beyond the trees which border The Botanist, turquoise waters and secluded coves invite balmy dips, long coastal hikes and afternoons sipping cocktails under umbrellas in seaside towns.

From the owner

“My favourite place to relax at The Botanist is to simply spend time in the glorious gardens. The house is a much loved Victorian landmark within the community and it is a tradition that we erect and decorate a large Christmas tree within the grounds each year, which gets the whole village into the festive mood.”

From the owner

The Botanist was originally built in 1895, in the parish of Lescrow in Fowey as a Dower house. The Victorian proportions and details in the construction indicate it was built to the highest standards known at the time.

We were told by the previous owners that the property was built to replicate a house in Golant, where the landowner built the house for his mistress; he would be seen on his horse galloping through the fields and hills to see her. This story was the inspiration for the design at the front of the house, making a Celtic love knot border. Who knows whether this is true...

The owners of Lescrow House informed me that The Botanist was the Dower House to the Lescrow House. The parish of Lescrow was once a thriving hamlet at the turn of the 1900s. The farmhouse employed many people to work the land and its dairy; however, the parish ceased to thrive after many men never returned from the World Wars.

Guest Testimonials

Cloudless skies, flat calm sea and dolphins escorting our boat on a fishing trip. These are some of the memories that will stay with us from our amazing stay at The Botanist: the perfect and stunning base to enjoy Fowey, the river and surrounding coast. My wife summed up the house and amenities in one word - wow!

This modern but Victorian house really is a home. The lush interiors have been selected so well and really compliment each room! Great for children too, with loads of room upstairs for playing in and the gardens with a summerhouse are another extension of that. The house is great for family gatherings, we have certainly enjoyed getting the family together for the first time in ages and it´s been so heart-warming to be able to share this experience in this lovely home. Thank you so much for the memories.

The property is lovely and has plenty of amenities, the welcome hamper was a real treat. Nick was brilliant and not too intrusive. The property was beautifully decorated and an incredible space for us to enjoy during our amazing stay.
