Encircled by swaying wildflower meadows and concealed by sand dunes, this clandestine retreat was ingeniously designed so that every room would look out to sea. With luxury interiors and balconies made for escapism, the eternal glamour of the art deco beach house lives on.

Introduction

Little more than half a mile from the hub of Mevagissey harbour, Portmellon Cove retains a blissful sense of seclusion compared to its lively neighbouring fishing villages and in 2020, became home to this luxury self-catering retreat. If its peaceful setting wasn’t enough, the house hides behind private gates and golden sand dunes colonised by grasses which swish in the sea breeze, leaving all murmurs of the outside world behind. The mix of clean Cornish air, fresh seafood and deep siestas on the terrace of this beachside eyrie will be just what the family needs this summer.

 

Inside

Behind Deco Beach House's curved, contemporary walls, an air of Cornwall’s maritime tradition still dwells. An art deco aesthetic underpins the interior, from crittall glass doors to walnut parquet flooring and a sweeping serpentine staircase that wouldn’t be out of place in a 1920's ocean liner. There are five bedroom suites and no lack of living spaces. Serve breakfast in the kitchen's waterfall dining area, where an antique mirrored splashback ensures wraparound sea views. In winter, settle by the drawing room's Bellfire burner and, in summer, bask in the sun on one of two balconies looking out to the craggy cliffs of Chapel Point. 

Outside

The Roseland’s unspoilt coastline will inspire Blyton-style adventures in all ages. Paddleboards await voyages across Grecian blue waters and secret caves tempt quests to find mermaids; little voices echoing within the stone caverns when children declare discoveries of rockpool treasures. When daylight fades, follow the path from the beach to the house and muddle iced cocktails with herbs from the garden. The large green oak terrace provides a prime spot for aperitifs when the sun turns dragonfruit pink; watch it dip into the ocean and mark the end of a day well spent.

Getting there

  • On the Map This large self-catering beach house sits in the hillside of Portmellon Bay, half a mile from Mevagissey on Cornwall's Roseland Heritage Coast AONB.
  • By Car From London, take the M4 towards Bath, the M5 south and the A30 to Cornwall, then follow the directions provided to the property- the journey time is approximately four and a half hours.
  • By Train The nearest train station is in St Austell, six miles north. From here there are taxis available or buses to River Street in Mevagissey.
  • By Plane Newquay airport is around 45 minutes away by car, with regular flights to London and taxis available.

We first came across the site in 2018 and were immediately attracted to the stunning coastal views that, regardless of the time of year, seemed to offer something new every time you looked out.

Being a stone's throw from Mevagissey, you get the benefits of a buzzing fisherman town (restaurants, shops, pubs) but have the added advantage of being just outside of that and being able to use Portmellon Bay as your own swimming pool. Personally, we love swimming in the sea all year round and are big fans of paddleboarding.

It´s hard to say which room is our favourite. We built the property so that all rooms would have specular views of the surrounding area, but I think for me, perhaps it's the kitchen that I most love. It really has become the hub of our home and having breakfast, lunch, dinner on the terrace overlooking the sea really is quite magical.
