Tucked away in the sleepy hamlet of Tregona near Porthcothan Bay sits Pepper Cove; a luxury self-catering holiday home perfect for families wanting a unique getaway on the North Cornwall coast. Starting life as a dairy barn 100 years ago, Pepper Cove has been renovated to offer luxury home by the sea. Beneath its modern facade, reclaimed wood and vintage antiques pepper this home with rustic charm.

Taking its name from a small beach nearby where Cornish smugglers once shipped the spice onto its sandy shores, Pepper Cove possesses a semblance of modern luxury and is studded with eclectic antique finds and rustic furnishings in shades of tan and azure. With its cosy interiors and two acre meadow, there's a heart-warming homeliness to this former dairy barn which is idyllically located off the beaten track between Padstow and Watergate Bay.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

This topsy-turvy home provides three characterful bedrooms on the ground floor. In addition to the zip and link bedroom there are two king-size bedrooms (one with en suite shower room) that each feature French doors leading onto the garden. Deep, sudsy bubble baths in the rustic chic family bathroom will be the perfect remedy after a long day at the beach.

It is no surprise that the locals try to keep St Merryn's “seven bays for seven days” a secret! There's a footpath from the barn that leads direct to the coast path; within a half-hour walk of Pepper Cove you can find yourself toes in sand. If you've little ones less inclined to head out on foot, there's a plethora of beaches from which to choose within a short drive of the house; where rock pool scouring, sandcastle crafting and wave jumping will idle away many a blissful day. Back at Pepper Cove, recline in the retro deckchairs in the tiered garden with something sparkly in hand, watching the stars prick the sky as night falls over the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to the garden area, there's a two-acre field named Pepper Meadow located to the rear of the property, which is as perfect a setting for exercising your dog as watching the little ones expend some excess energy.

For Relaxation

Pepper Cove is great for those who love to ramble. Whether donning walking boots and striding out OS map in hand is your idea of a perfect day spent, or you'd rather a more relaxed stroll around the higgledy-piggledy streets of Padstow, perusing its art galleries, quirky cafés and nautical boutiques, you're perfectly placed for both. For a real taste of Cornwall, tuck into gourmet fish, chips and minted mushy peas on a ferry ride over to Rock and hear the distant fishermen's sea shanties carry across the sea breeze. In winter, do not miss the town's renowned Christmas festival and light display, where strings of golden bulbs illuminate the harbour like fireflies.

Pepper Cove has ample parking for three cars. The property is equipped with dishwasher, fridge, freezer, electric hob, microwave and Range oven. As well as a perfect resting place for buckets and spades, the utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Our Take

Property Owner Andrew says

This old grain store and dairy barn was a joy to renovate. We salvaged original features and quirky finds from reclamation yards, transforming them into luxurious artifacts to add character. Our favorite thing about Pepper Cove is the sublime peacefullness; it´s hard to find these days!

At Pepper Cove, the farmhouse-style kitchen really is the heart of the house. Families will love to plan the day's activities around the benched wooden table, tucking into freshly squeezed orange juice and bacon sarnies grilled in the Range cooker. Outside there is plenty of room for al fresco dining on the picnic table or gazebo in the pretty tiered garden.

In-House Catering

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Equidistant between Jamie Oliver's Fifteen in Watergate Bay and Rick Stein's scattering of eateries in Padstow, fine dining is never far away on a stay at Pepper Cove. For a gourmet pub experience, try Travellers Rest at Trevarrian or The Smugglers Den at Cubert. En route to the beach, don't forget to pick up a traditional Cornish pasty at one of the local bakeries on your way!
