Luxury self-catering accommodation in Porthcothan Bay
A long strip of sand leading down to the waves and sheltered by two lines of cliff, this pretty dog-friendly bay is a great starting point for those hiking the coast.
Not far south from the busy harbour town of Padstow, and to the north of Newquay, Porthcothan Bay is a popular family beach, perfectly placed for a luxury homestay thanks to its long stretch of sands, seasonal shop and abundance of rock pools for small explorers. Up on the craggy cliff paths, ramblers pass through while walking the South West Coast Path. Thanks to its picturesque coastline, it's no surprise this charming spot was used for filming TV series Poldark; to get a better look, pop into the Tredrea Inn for a rest paired with panoramic views of the bay.
Gorse-lined routes with hairpin paths down to tiny coves dot the coastline here; take the scenic clamber north with your four-legged friend to Trevose Head for stunning lighthouse photo opportunities, or venture south for a cream tea at Carnewas café, perfectly sited above the impressive cluster of rocks at Bedruthan Steps. Further inland, Tintagel Castle perches dramatically above the sea and is well worth the climb for those with a head for heights. For an action-packed day, the go-kart track and Cornish Arms pub of St Merryn is just a short drive away.
