Surrender to the call of the sea and embrace your adventurous side as The Spyglass seduces you into the captivating world of maritime Cornwall. Just a stone’s throw from the sea with access to the beach and interiors to die for, this luxury self-catering beach cottage is one of Gorran Haven’s best kept secrets.
Set deep in south Cornwall near Mevagissey, a unique beach cottage awaits... The Spyglass was part of the original fort built to defend the secluded cove of Gorran Haven during Napoleonic times. With crystal blue waters lapping the wall beneath and exquisite interior touches such as the giant bronze octopus, this explorer’s bolthole has all the elements of a Bond villain’s lair. Behind the strong stone walls of this luxury self-catering beach cottage, a vintage maritime theme weaves its way through every room, fusing the owner’s sense of adventure with tales of the property’s roots.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
The sleeping quarters are set on the first floor along with the family bathroom. The master bedroom features a gorgeous super king-size bed, stained wood floors and whitewashed walls clad in the original tongue and groove panels. The twin bedroom is perfect for children who will sleep soundly comforted by the ebb and flow of the tide. Awaking to mesmerising sea views, you may have to rub your eyes in the morning to ensure you are not still dreaming.
One of the best features of The Spyglass is the access down to Gorran Haven beach below; meaning sunrise and sunset sea swims Ursula Andress-style will be top of the agenda. Get the catch of the day frying on the barbecue before dusk, pick a blanket to snuggle up in and watch the sea change from silver to pink and squid ink blue. A roaring fire and rum on the rocks will be the perfect complement to a crisp winter night, with stormy seas and twinkling stars all around.
Gorran Haven lies on the fringes of the Roseland Peninsula (an AONB), commanding unsurpassed sea views and cliff top walks rated among the best in the world. Follow this spectacular stretch of the South West Coast Path to discover a labyrinth of tiny hamlets, woodland and secret coves. From the Eden Project (and Bond film set) to the sub tropical Lost Gardens of Heligan, there is plenty on offer to delight garden enthusiasts, whilst lovers of Cornish castles can roam the stately dwellings until the cows come home! Caerhays, St Mawes and Pendennis are all within an hour's drive; whose summer concert matinées and festive fairs are sure to get you in the season's spirit.
Due to the bijou nature of the village, luggage can be dropped outside but cars must park in the car park a five minute walk away. The owners provide a permit in summer and there is an honesty box in place for winter. The garden is not enclosed. The kitchen has an electric oven, washer dryer, microwave and fridge freezer.

AROUND THE PROPERTY
Style: More boutique than shabby chic, this ancient fisherman’s cottage embraces a rugged yet refined seaside style. Soft battered leather and antiquated trinkets give the whitewashed cottage an authentic colonial feel.
Property Owner Paul says
The constantly changing view of the bay from the cottage is stunning, mesmerising and magical. Having the ability to relax and enjoy the proximity to the sea, while in your own garden is what makes this cottage so special. Listening to the waves while you fall asleep will guarantee sweet dreams too.

FOOD AND DRINK
Hail the fishermen below and bag yourself the catch of the day to cook up on the barbecue in the garden. Lobb's Farm Shop is three miles away and will provide all the extras you need to cook up a storm. All that will be left to do is chink flutes of Cornish bubbles and savour the taste of a traditional fisherman's supper.
If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).
If you can tear yourself away from the comfort of your bite-sized castle, a slice of home made cake and hot chocolate at The Hidden Hut on Porthcurnick beach is a welcome treat to warm cold fingertips after a blustery walk. Just a short walk up the hill from The Spyglass sits popular bistro The Llawnroc (Cornwall backwards!), which serves up dishes such as scallops from Mevagissey coupled with local asparagus and freshly landed hake from Looe.
