The Barrels
St Agnes, Cornwall, UK
Set high above Trevaunance Cove, within St Agnes’ UNESCO World Heritage landscape, The Barrels is steeped in the rich history and raw beauty that define this dramatic stretch of Cornwall’s north coast. Restored and extended in a sensitive meeting of heritage and contemporary architecture, this luxury self-catering home unfurls across a pair of 19th-century miners’ cottages and a light-filled modern addition designed to frame the bay below. Sleeping up to ten, with a private cinema, games room and cedar hot tub, it’s a home for gathering, surfing and fireside storm-watching. Read more...

Introduction
When the owner discovered the old stone house – once comprising the historic cottages first recorded on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map – she envisaged a simple, sensitive restoration; but clearing the overgrowth revealed sublime views of the open sea, and her vision grew skywards. Today, The Barrels unites the original stone façade with a timber-clad extension that rises into the hillside to maximise ocean views, echoing the familiar pitched-roof form of Cornish cottages but with Scandinavian simplicity. Together, they form a contemporary coastal refuge: somewhere to escape to, and somewhere to restore.
Inside
A continuous local stone wall flows through all three levels, linking old with new; a lift easing the journey between ground and top floor. The owner’s appreciation of Nordic design is expressed through an uncluttered palette, clean architectural lines and expansive windows that make living art of the sea beyond: crystalline blue in summer, hypnotically wild in winter. Moss-toned velvet, sandy ochre and rich timber lend warmth throughout, from the five bedrooms to the soaring games room that cleverly transforms for pool or table tennis. Gather around the kitchen island as a supper of just-caught crab tagliatelle takes shape, or recline by the crackling woodburner as evening casts the cliffs in a honeyed glow.
Outside
Slide open the living room doors for an al fresco coffee whilst dawn's first surfers ride the peeling waves below – the sea close enough to make an early dip irresistible. At the terrace's edge, a cedar hot tub offers warmth after saltwater swims and days spent ambling gorse-threaded clifftops. On the garden’s western slope, a path through plantings by RHS award-winning designer Kate Tague leads to a secluded seat at the hill's highest point. Wander into St Agnes for a taste of village life at the pub or bakery, or join the South West Coast Path on foot, following the cliffs towards the engine houses of Wheal Coates and the golden sands of nearby Chapel Porth.

“I wanted The Barrels to feel like a refuge, connected to the landscape but open to the sea. I hope that you, like me, will love having the house full of people. Even when everyone’s here, the joy is that there´s always somewhere to find a little quiet.”
When I found the cottages, they had been uninhabited for a while and were dilapidated and overgrown. Once home to workers from the nearby Wheal Friendly mine, they had originally been two separate dwellings; the architects reinstated the stone arch of the second front doorway to honour that pairing. Initially, I intended to mend and restore the cottages, but walking up the hill behind them revealed how much of a sea view there could be, and The Barrels became a more ambitious project.
The aim was to maximise the view while keeping the house nestled into the hillside, to create cocooning feeling. It’s also understated: from outside, you don’t realise how grand it is. I like the contrast in material and style between the original stone cottages and the contemporary timber addition, but it was important to connect old and new. We introduced a local stone wall that makes it flow all the way through, a nod to its history and World Heritage setting. It is two houses, but they’re connected and they’re one.
There’s a Scandinavian influence on the design, with deliberately uncluttered interiors, a palette of white, wood and stone, and high ceilings. You look out the window – that’s the art.
I swim all year round, and one of my favourite things is coming back here with friends for coffee and breakfast. We’ve had lovely evenings with a chef from the village cooking for us, and plenty of lively family Christmases. There are so many different spaces and levels that, even with a full house, you can slip onto the middle terrace for some time to yourself.
The combination of the view and the location is what makes The Barrels feel special to me, especially having grown up in the area. The beach, the Driftwood Spars and the village are all within walking distance, yet sitting here you feel removed from the bustle, even in summer. I hope guests find that same balance: plenty to explore, and somewhere relaxing to return to.
