Suki | Luxury Beach House | Tregonhawke Cliff, Whitsand Bay, Cornwall

Suki

Torpoint, Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, UK

The story of this Tregonhawke Cliff hideout begins in the East. Moulded from earthen materials and encased in timber slatting, its roots might rest in sukiya-zukuri architecture, but its fruits hang high above Whitsand Bay. Named after a concept that teaches the delights of refinement, elegance, and exquisitely performed tea ceremonies, Suki is a luxury beach house in Cornwall that could’ve been plucked from beneath a cherry tree in Kyoto.

Book

Introduction

As if the architects behind the abodes of a Geisha and a Samurai mixed up their blueprints, this is a home of masculine and feminine halves. In a spirit of compromise, the best of both remained: pink softens ink, terracotta tempers boucle, and carpentry warms claywork. Evoking the feeling of a traditional Japanese tea house, yet with all the coastal cool that Whitsand Bay affords, this laidback luxury beach house has the hallmarks of a romantic hideout, but with a modest twist. With its aromatic cedarwood hot tub, glass walls that unfurl like blooming sakura, and innovative eco-wood cladding, Suki brings Japandi aesthetics to Cornwall’s secret corner.

Inside

There’s something about Suki that feels like living inside the pinkish-amber glow of a Himalayan salt lamp. With blushing plaster walls, reams of natural light, a crackling Stûv woodburner, and furnishings kept to a meditative minimum, even Marie Kondo would approve of this joy-sparking space. Spend mornings elbow-to-elbow, whipping up soufflé pancakes and sipping matcha lattes while the sun dances on reclaimed tiles; at twilight, sink beneath bubbles in the stone tub, with far-reaching views from picture windows over a dazzling arm of the Atlantic. Ready for a taste of the simple life? Go where snug functionalism meets Ikigai micro-fort.

Outside

It’s Tregonhawke Cliff, but it feels like the seascapes of the Aegean Islands. On blue sky days, sit cross-legged on the terrace, engaging in whichever mindfulness practice works best for you: be it inhaling coffee, or deep in Zen. Then into the hot tub for a soak in the sky: from these great heights, six-foot-wingspan gannets seem to plunge into the sea like arrows and golden sands take on the appearance of muscovado sugar. When you can tear yourself away from this south-facing suntrap, there’s surf spots where dolphins show fin, coastal cafés serving toasted tea cakes, and beaches made for wild swimming and chilled Riesling sundowners.

From the owner

“It´s so discreet, that you barely notice the path that leads to Suki. The interiors were crafted by a carpenter with a past life as a boat builder, and tactile plaster walls change shades as you move through the house.”

From the owner

As part of our retirement plan, we were looking for a holiday let investment to provide us with an income and an occasional escape from family and friends in Bristol. We looked at, and passed up, a number of sensible options before falling for an old timber cabin on a cliff. Although the cabin was not suitable for modern living, it sat on a freehold plot of land with the most amazing views across Whitsand Bay and beyond. We had a vision for redevelopment that was shared with Unique Homestays, and worked with the team to help develop our vision and bring it to life.

Words or photos will never do justice to the view or the sense of floating above the sea when looking out from the deck or hot tub. There is always something going on - people in miniature on the beach or in the sea, ships passing through, or the abundance of wildlife including birds flying past at eye level. Although we would highly recommend exploring the area, we honestly feel that the best days are spent here from sunrise until sunset in the relaxing confines of our little piece of Cornwall.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
