Chagford

On the fringes of rugged Dartmoor, Chagford is a small, quintessentially English market town on the northern edge of this legendary national park.

Historic Chagford boasts the famous octagonal market house sitting in the centre, a hub of activity and community spirit. Visit the Church of St Michael, Castle Drogo and Okehampton Castle to soak up some of Chagford’s history and discover the local legends and folklore that Dartmoor is famous for. Chagford is renowned for its River Teign fed swimming pool, which opened in 1933 to provide local children with a safe place to swim without disturbing fishermen upstream.

The town makes the perfect base for exploring Dartmoor National Park and all the area has to offer. Pack the walking boots and stomp through the rugged moor with a map in hand and take in the glorious wilderness with only the local Dartmoor ponies for company. Walking affords the chance to view breath-taking scenery of Dartmoor’s sparkling rivers and iconic granite-topped tors. With an eclectic mix of small independent shops and grocery stores which have been trading for generations,
