Tamarisk Beach House | Luxury Self-Catering | Woolacombe Bay

Tamarisk Beach House

Woolacombe, Devon, UK

Impeccable interiors, salty air and panoramic views over Woolacombe Bay make Tamarisk Beach House an idyllic retreat for families looking for luxury self-catering by the sea in North Devon. This warm and traditional seaside home occupies an unrivalled location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can drink in the intoxicating ever-changing sea views from dawn until dusk.

Introduction

In an enviable spot, Tamarisk Beach House overlooks the award-winning golden sands of Woolacombe Bay. Built in the 1930s, this seaside retreat has opened its doors to a wealth of characters, from Hollywood stars to American service personnel in the Second World War. Spend balmy days relaxing on the beach or unwinding in the tiered garden, children kept quiet spying on pods of dolphins in the surf. When the Devon weather turns tropical, gather around the dining table with a banquet of cheese and wine and prepare for dramatic thunderstorms to illuminate a violet sky.

Inside

Drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts era, Tamarisk Beach House oozes style with flirts of Art Deco elegance and modern luxury. Promising beach-side living with a sumptuous twist, look forward to lazy mornings watching the sun hazily shimmering on the water. Pull up a pew at the kitchen island with a steaming coffee before gathering around the dining table with fresh orange juice and thick wedges of toast and a backdrop of blue. In the evening, melt into one of the sofas with a family movie before wending your way to bed.

Outside

Sunbathing in the day or stargazing at night, the balcony is the place to be. For water-lovers, seasoned surfers will be seduced by the Atlantic swells and excellent surf spots close by, while rookies can hire a board from one of the local surf schools under friendly, expert guidance. Ensconced by nature, there is abundance of activities for the whole family; cycle the Tarka Trail, fly kites across the three-mile stretch of golden sands on the doorstep or tiptoe through the purple heather of Exmoor's National Park, listening out for the rutting stags as they lock antlers, sending echos through the woodland.

From the owner

“I truly believe Tamarisk Beach House is the most unique retreat, with its unrivalled coastal setting and sea views. It´s no wonder Lady Chichester chose Woolacombe as her summer holiday residence all those years ago!”

From the owner

Built in 1937, I knew I had to have this stunning Arts and Craft house. For me, it was the pretty fireplaces, unique coastal location and magnificent views which closed the deal. I revelled in the opportunity to renovate it and undertook a mammoth two and a half year transformation.

The house was in quite a neglected state, but luckily the original fireplaces and maple floors were still intact. I wanted to ensure the 1930's charm remained, but also bring Tamarisk up-to-date with modern conveniences, new furnishings and Art Deco style.

Woolacombe beach was used in World War II for training exercises for the D-Day landings, and the house was used as an officers’ club for the many American service personnel who were sent to Devon. My friend, and previous owner of the house, bought Tamarisk in 1959. She came from a family of actors and her uncle was Victor McLaglan, an old black and white Hollywood movie star in the 1920s who won an Oscar for The Informer in 1935. Tamarisk has an air of understated glamour to reflect these old Hollywood links.

I relish seeing guests enjoy the house as their own.

Guest Testimonials

This was a wonderful, very comfortable, very clean, well-equipped house of a high standard. It was ideal for a family group. The owner made us feel very welcome. There are lovely views over the bay.

A lovely house within a short distance of the beach which was great for the children. Great touch with the Willy Wonka bed linen and toys provided, both of which were much appreciated by the younger members of our party.

We have had a very memorable family stay, thank you. We really appreciated how welcoming the house was on our arrival. The location is stunning! The house was perfect for our eleven week old new addition and we also celebrated an engagement and even a ´dream job´ offer whilst we were here. Would recommend Watersmeet Hotel for afternoon tea too! Thank you!

We wanted to celebrate our very special silver wedding anniversary, just the two of us with a view of the sea in a wonderful house. We are fortunate to have travelled the world for business and pleasure, however this is the best house we have ever rented. Our five days here will remain very special in our hearts. We will be back!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our all too brief stay in this wonderful house. There was everything, and more that we could possibly need to make this break a wonderful experience. We were lucky with the weather and because of this we were able to enjoy our breakfast on the balcony whilst watching the surfers. Thank you!

We all felt the property was very homely, well decorated and had every facility one needed. The owner made us feel very welcome and we had a memorable time. We really couldn´t fault the location and the sunsets were fantastic.

In many ways the picture in on the website did not give it Justice to the home´s beauty. As soon as you walk in the door, you feel every penny was worth it. Stylish and homely great and unusual.

This is our second stay in this wonderful house and it´s just as perfect as the first! We had great weather too! We concur with all of the comments that have gone before about Rock Inn and the excellent service. It was lovely to see Tricia again, an incredible lady and friend. We´ll be back!

Tamarisk Beach House provided a wonderful home for all three generations of our party. The views were fabulous even when the weather was a little wet. It is set in a great location and the owner Trisha was very welcoming.

We feel privileged to have stayed in Trisha´s stunning home which has achieved the balance of comfort and style superbly! The views from the balcony are wonderful come rain or shine and to wake up to such a vista is just fabulous. The sea was far warmer than we expected and the surf was fun. Rockleigh takeaway is a must if you, like us, can´t tear yourself away from this amazing place. Thank you Trisha, you have been absolutely lovely!

The house is set in an outstanding location with great views. Woolacombe beach was superb, especially if you walk further towards Putsborough. We booked bikes at Otter Bike Hire in Braunton and cycled the Tarka Trail 16 miles to and from the cafe at Frimington Quay. The surfing lessons were great too.

Tamarisk Beach House exceeded our expectations. The owner was very warm, friendly and informative; I think she really made our stay extra special- thank you.
