Carriage House | Luxury Self-Catering Home | Litton Cheney, Dorset

The Carriage House

Litton Cheney, Dorset, UK

The Carriage House is an exquisite self-catering homestay set in the chocolate-box hamlet of Litton Cheney in Dorset. Situated beneath chalk hills in the valley of the River Bride, both Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coastline are just a short drive away. Unravel and luxuriate in the serene surroundings and feel your worries melt away in this private paradise for six.

Introduction

A beautifully furnished self-catering home with thoughtful touches throughout, this stone retreat has comfort high on the agenda. Spend winter nights snuggled up by the woodburner or taking a bubbly soak in your en suite tub with a glass of fizz. When summer calls, a short drive will find the family at some of Dorset's most beautiful golden sand beaches. A tennis court is available for an impromptu knock-around or perhaps a more serious mini-tournament with fellow guests, followed, of course, by a sundowner to reward efforts.

Inside

Classic with a modern edge, the interiors flaunt characterful flourishes of romanticism and charm. Benefiting from ample space, natural light and views over the luscious green garden, there's space for everyone to come together or find a quiet corner to relax with a book. Providing abundant comfort, three bedrooms with en suites sit under the eaves of the high-vaulted ceilings. Think luxury stand-alone bath tubs, rainfall showers and rolling views out across the valley.

Outside

Winding your way through the radiant countryside, past honey-coloured stone cottages, the peaceful church and quaint village pub, guests will be enchanted from the moment of arrival. The picturesque private walled garden is a lovely place to sit and ponder, taking in the peace and quiet of rural village life. As the children scatter across the lawn for a game of a tag, fire up the barbecue and pour chinking jugs of ice-cold, fruit-packed Pimms. Sip, socialise and bask under the glorious warmth of the sun’s rays.

From the owner

“Finished with modern touches and lashings of comfort, we want The Carriage House to be enjoyed as a spacious, welcoming family home. Encompassed by nature - make sure you bring your boots!”

From the owner

The house was built in 1851 and was originally a stable used for storage. We bought the property in 2009 and have since renovated this beautiful old building (adjacent to our own home, The Old Rectory). The Carriage House has been designed with a cosy European feel in mind, where time can be enjoyed either in the pretty garden, exploring the local area or snuggled up in front of the wood burner.

In the 1950s, the church sold The Carriage House and The Old Rectory to Reynolds and Janet Stone, the first private owners. Reynolds was an engraver whose works include the Royal Arms masthead for the Times newspaper and the giant marble memorial to Sir Winston Churchill for Westminster Abbey. Some twelve printing presses were installed in The Carriage House.

Reynolds and his wife Janet were great entertainers. Many famous people such as Sir John Betjeman, Iris Murdoch and John Bailey came to stay.

We hope the Carriage House offers everyone a fun and restful holiday!

Guest Testimonials

From the moment we walked into The Carriage House we felt at home. The level of detail in the design is amazing, every aspect of the interior and exterior has been thought out to a high standard. The location is great as it enabled us to explore a lot of the surrounding areas. This house is perfect for all wanting a truly relaxing break. We enjoyed nights in around the log burner and the peacefulness of the surrounding area. I would strongly recommend this property and the service from Unique Homestays.

The property and the owners of The Carriage House are lovely. The cottage and facilities are outstanding, the beds, bedding, shower wash and hand soap are all of the highest quality! Fresh flowers were provided throughout the property, these were beautiful and such a lovely touch. And the hamper was the best we have ever had! This included the owners own brand of delicious Rosa Cheney chocolate and other local produce. The garden was beautiful and full of interest! We had a wonderful stay and could not fault one little thing!

Absolutely wonderful, we could not fault it, everything was totally perfect. The property was great, very high quality and the owners were lovely. We´ve already recommended it to so many people.

We had an absolutely fantastic time, we were completely and utterly blown away. The house and property were absolutely perfect from the exterior to the interior and down to every little detail. The whole stay couldn´t have been better in any way, it was perfect. The welcome pack and cake were also fantastic, we loved everything.

The Carriage House completely surpassed our expectations! It was light and spacious and equipped to a very high standard. Our resident chef (our youngest daughter) loved the kitchen. Claire was extremely helpful and welcoming. We were greeted with a generously loaded hamper and flowers, which was greatly appreciated. The facilities were excellent and the setting was beautifully tranquil.

Absolutely gorgeous property with lots of space, beautifully decorated and lovely quiet location. We really enjoyed a long walk to The Three Horseshoes and the Anchor Inn (the walk took us about 2 hours with a stop off at the farm where we were lucky enough to find new born calves).

When I searched in the area I just fell in love with the property and the style. As we were taking a couple of single friends with us I liked the fact that there were double bedrooms and each with a bathroom. It had so much space and was lovely and warm (no heating required at the time). We all thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. Great location to explore the coast. Very quiet and private. It was excellently presented with superb furnishings and touches.

Everything in the property was of extremely good taste and well looked after. The owners have done an outstanding job. Whole experience was excellent. Cleanliness and standard of facilities of the property were very impressive.

We loved our stay in the house and we really enjoyed the area - being by the coast but in the country. We hope to return and would certainly go back to The Carriage House again
