Introduction

Set just three miles outside the ancient town of Sherborne, Featherdown is a charming 17th Century home nestled within 12 acres of gardens and woodland, boasting enviable views over the rolling Dorset and Somerset countryside. Pack the whole family in the car and escape to the country for a luxury self-catering holiday filled with garden frolics, wholesome suppers and merriment by the fire whilst Grandpa provides the sing-along soundtrack on the piano.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

This spacious Hamstone house encloses six bedrooms and five bathrooms on the first floor and two WCs on the ground floor. The master king-size bedroom has an en suite with WC, double sink, shower and roll top bath. There is a further king-size bedroom with en suite wet room and WC, and two further king-size bedrooms; one of which has an en suite with WC, bath and overhead shower. After a day of exploring, exhausted children will gladly skip upstairs to retire to the two charming twin bedrooms which complete this family home.

Outside

This rural retreat is perfectly positioned for country pursuits and visits to stately English homes and gardens. Start the day with a brisk game of tennis, then don your wax jacket, tweeds and wellingtons to embark on a long countryside stomp with the children and canine companions in tow. Ruddy faced and with lungs full with fresh air, stop off at The Queen's Arms en route and relax with a hearty ploughman’s lunch and glass of burgundy by the fire.

For Relaxation

Take advantage of the Aga in the large farmhouse kitchen and get creative with a family bake-off. A platter brimming with frosted butterfly buns, jam tarts and sugared wedges of Victoria sponge will be the perfect reward after a gentle game of boules or croquet on the lawn under the summer sun. Spend an afternoon milling around the Medieval market town of Sherborne, dubbed one of the most beautiful in England. However families choose to relax, the clean country air at Featherdown is sure to cleanse and rejuvenate weary souls.

Practicalities

There is ample parking for up to five cars on the gravelled drive. Featherdown has everything one could wish for in a home away from home including two dishwashers, a fridge, freezer, washing machine, dryer, electric oven with gas hob and Aga to complete the country dream! Whilst the hound-loving owners want dogs to enjoy their break as much as you, they kindly request dogs sleep in the large boot room overnight.

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

The well-appointed farmhouse-style kitchen will make baking a dream! When in season, pluck some apples and plums from the orchard and bake a heart-warming fruit cobbler in the Aga, which will fill the house with the most delectable scent and be the perfect finish to a feast around the grand dining table. There is also an electric oven and gas hob for those who shy away from the Aga.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Walk along The Ridge to reach local pub The Queen’s Arms where you can expect to trial the best of the local fodder, try their shot game terrine followed by roasted pigeon breast and a delicious home-made pudding. For fine dining, head to the award-winning King’s Arms or The Green at Sherborne, each with sophisticated menus which change by the season.
