Rural self-catering farmhouse in Dorset

Introduction

Rich, indulgent living comes naturally at Orbis, where luxurious furnishings and thick textiles swathe calming interiors in this most tranquil and private of settings. Escape from it all and read in the stone temple by the stream, warm up from a day’s exploration in the sauna and spend nights curled up together watching films on the projectors. Flower boxes line interior windowsills, glass stretches from floor to sky and touches of rusticity mix with modern style. As far as self-catering houses go, this Dorset getaway is second to none.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With dual-aspect windows overlooking the gardens and an en suite bathroom with separate rainfall shower, Orbis’ master super king-size bedroom is a tranquil oasis to retreat to at the end of the day. There are two further king-size bedrooms, one with en suite rainfall shower room and one family suite with double bed and triple bunk room. There is one super-king zip-and-link and one super king-size bedroom in Papilio Creek, along with two family bathrooms and one separate WC throughout both of the properties.

Outside

Classic 18th century leaded gothic-style windows and local Sherborne stone combine to create an enchanting façade to this unique pairing of properties. Orbis boasts sweeping topiary-peppered lawns and is ringed by mature borders ensuring peaceful seclusion. Surrounding views are of rolling hills, while the southern and western boundaries fringe farmland. A small mill stream with a footbridge meanders along the banks, adjacent to which is a pillared grotto with a timber walkway. The deck with outdoor sofas allows you to sit and take in the heady scent of the lavender-filled flower beds.

For Relaxation

Take a stroll in the orchard and pluck the juiciest fruits for whipping up tempting desserts. Enjoy a game of Pétanque on the gravelled outdoor area, play some croquet on the lawn, or take advantage of the numerous areas dedicated to al fresco dining. Teenagers will take delight in a games room specifically tailored for their entertainment and fun, while grown-ups kick back, glass of wine in hand, French doors flung open to enjoy the stunning countryside views from this rural haven within the Dorset countryside.

Dine at The Chapel A Grade-II listed former church, now a Michelin acclaimed and Bib Gourmand awarded restaurant serving up mouth-watering cuisine in a contemporary-characterful setting. Dine al fresco on the sun-drenched, jasmine-scented terrace and gaze over Somerset’s skyline with a glass of something chilled from The Chapel’s winestore.

Gallery Gallivanting The historic town of Bruton is home to the pioneering Hauser and Wirth. Already established in London’s Mayfair and New York, the art gallery's additional residence in Bruton creates an international stage for contemporary art in Somerset. Spend the day here ambling around the exhibition spaces, admiring the gallery rooms and delighting in the walled gardens of this idyllic setting.

Sherborne Castle A family home since 1617 and built by Sir Walter Raleigh, this historic house reflects over 400 years of British history. Imprinted by each succeeding generation, its magnificent staterooms, Tudor kitchen, fossil archive and 42 acres of tranquil, landscaped gardens make for a culture-rich day out for the entire family.

On the Water Calling all keen anglers, let the rest of the family know you've 'gone fishing' and perch upon the banks at Sutton Bingham Reservoir. Set in the rolling hills of the Somerset and Dorset border these excellent waters are stocked with rainbow and brown trout to keep you hooked for the entire day.

Sherborne Farmer's Market Taking place on the third Friday of every month, the tempting aroma of fresh baked bread and garden-fresh fruit and vegetables makes Sherborne's farmer's market the perfect place to fill your basket during your luxury self-catering stay. The monthly market is perfect for handmade Sherborne gifts and souvenirs.

Dorset's Jurassic Coastline The world renowned Jurassic Coast is ultimately called-for when staying at Orbis. Rich in prehistoric remains, the Jurassic Coastline is England's first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, ranked among the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the world's natural wonders. Walk in the footsteps of giants and take the family on a fossil hunting walk.
