Prairie De Gorge

Shipton Gorge, Dorset, UK

Prairie De Gorge started life a duo of tumbledown cob cottages and has been tenderly renovated into a luxury self-catering retreat with the addition of real fires and French-style country charm. Set on the fringe of Shipton Gorge near Burton Bradstock, this timeless family home is just three miles from Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast with its unique landscape of dramatic cliffs, fossil-laden beaches and Olympic-class sailing waters.

Introduction

Approached via a winding country lane flanked by green pastures, Prairie De Gorge is sure to delight discerning families looking for a luxury homestay on the Dorset coast. Indulge in drawn-out mornings reclining on the sofa with a book or sprawled out in the garden under dappled sunlight, before taking the short ramble down to the characterful New Inn in Shipton Gorge to refuel with a hearty lunch. On winter days the log fire will be the heart of the home, where families can cosy up with board games, the brimming welcome hamper and trays of tea, indulging in good old-fashioned quality time.

Inside

Behind golden Dorset cobb walls, this family home captures a romantic French country style. Antiqued furnishings and floral fabrics are set against a calming colour palette, complemented with tints of rose and chalky blue. From the owner

“The spectacular West Dorset landscapes surrounding Prairie de Gorge never cease to amaze us, from glimpses of the Jurassic Coast at Burton Bradstock to the Iron Age fort at Eggerdon Hill. On a clear night, the peaceful star-filled sky is just beautiful and commands awe.”

From the owner

The house was originally built somewhere around 1800 as accommodation for the local workers at the Bonscombe Farm estate. Back then, the estate stretched to 150 acres but was subdivided over time through a succession of owners, and now only occupies 16 acres.

The house is built of Dorset cobb under a slate roof. However, we believe that the roof would have originally been thatched as pieces of straw were found in the beams. The style of architecture is reflective of this unique part of West Dorset, where Cobb stone is a principle building material. The use of slate is also seen in many of the coastal villages and towns, including Lyme Regis.

We bought the house in 2003, from the previous owner who still lives in the village. The house was in a tumbledown state when we acquired it and significant renovations were carried out. We have pictures of the house and land from the 1940s hanging in the kitchen; we have to pinch ourselves knowing that this beautiful haven is now our own!

Guest Testimonials

The property is absolutely stunning, beautifully decorated, and we really loved the huge farmhouse style kitchen, the cosy living room with log burner and the luxurious master bedroom. The style and attention to detail is exquisite, the hamper and flowers were a perfect touch. The location is so pretty and peaceful, waking up to deer and rabbit in the paddock behind the cottage, but also perfectly situated for days out to some of the stunning coastal villages and towns in Dorset. Also, The New Inn serves the most amazing food!

A magnificent farmhouse which was comfortable in every way; we loved it! We enjoyed sunny days exploring Jurassic coastline and windy weather settled in by the fire. Perfect.

What a wonderful ´home from home´; the house has everything we needed. It was our first time in Dorset and it won´t be our last! From the cosy bedrooms and bed linen to the well equipped kitchen - everything here is luxurious. Thank you so much to Helen and Eric and of course Janet, we have to come back!

We had a fantastic break at Prairie De Gorge! The holiday and house was exactly what we dreamt it would be. Perfect. I couldn´t recommend Unique Homestays highly enough, and already have to a number of people.

The whole experience of booking the holiday, finding the property, our welcome, the hamper, staying in the house has all been a delight. No hassle, no problems just a perfect week´s rest. A lovely house in a very quiet location which suited us perfectly. The extras left by the owners of the house were welcome and, along with our hamper, we enjoyed lots of tasty treats.

A beautiful home in a stunning area of Dorset. We fully enjoyed all the little extras that made it so special, the flowers, hamper and food essentials on our arrival.
