Romany | Luxury Self-Catering Cottage Retreat | Rye, Winchelsea

Romany

Brookland, Kent, UK

Cool but cosy and bright, feminine but not the least bit ditsy, Romany promises a refreshing escape where flower children can waltz freely to the rhythmic beat of their untamed hearts. Hidden behind a meadow of swaying grass and with a hot tub settled between headily-scented herbs, here is a luxury cabin where one can run to in search of wild abandon, exploring the remote countryside, long beaches and tidal creeks of Romney Marsh.

Introduction

Designers Dave and Atlanta Bartlett have created a true back-to-nature retreat near their home in Rye, a secret cabin which welcomes guests to fall into step with the gentle tempo of Romney Marsh. Inside is a welcoming, informal affair where pure relaxation washes through the soul, inviting winter nights curled by the woodburner and summer mornings making breakfast with the sun pouring through the windows. Here inside the bubble of this romantic self-catering hideaway, it's as if nothing else in the world could possibly exist.

Inside

With its shimmering chandelier and billowing muslin, Romany’s bedroom is like a scene right out of a vintage romance film. Wake to the gentle swaying of fabric on the four-poster bed and stretch into the day with nothing on the agenda but propping up on soft pillows while sipping English tea. There is a roll top bath in the bedroom at Romany, perfect for evenings in together (one tucked under linens and the other under bubbles), and a shower room with WC off the hallway.

Outside

A white picket fence, a colourful flower and herb garden and a hot tub for two tucked away far from view; Romany’s outdoor space offers a taste of The Good Life with some luxurious touches thrown in for good measure. On those blazing days when the sun scorches the ground, retreat to the daybed for an afternoon siesta before a lazy supper of local cheese and fresh bread under the pear tree as the sunset watercolours the sky. If you can, step outside your Romany bubble and discover the unique landscape of Romney Marsh.

From the owner

“The cabin is perfectly situated for you to enjoy the stunning countryside and the gorgeous Romney Marsh - also known as the Fifth Continent - with its wide open vistas, special micro climate and proximity to miles of beautiful coastline filled with wildlife and beaches.”

From the owner

We have lived on Romney Marsh for 15 years and totally adore it. At times it is like an onslaught to your senses with fragrant smells of rape fields in the spring, wheat in the summer and the rich marshy earth in the winter. In the summer we wake every day to the sound of birdsong, the roar of the poplar trees and the extraordinary 'chorus' of the marsh frogs.

Romney Marsh is a nature lovers paradise; bats, foxes, badgers, mink, stoats, water voles, hares, field mice and moles are all welcome residents here while birdwatchers flock from all over the world to catch a sight of the amazing and  rare array of birdlife from Marsh harriers, Kestrels, Nightingales, Cuckoos, Herons, Cormorants, woodpeckers, and barn owls.

Rare sightings include Honey Buzzards, European Serins and Purple Herons. Romney Marsh is also home to the much protected Great Crested Newt and many endangered insects... and we have it all in our back garden!

This is a land of smugglers, shipwrecks (the local pub was once a smugglers inn), long walks, cycling, birdwatching, beaches, windsurfing, fishing (you can catch mackerel off the beach at Dungeness) and all only an hour and a half from London.
