Introduction

Rustling sea grasses, calling oystercatchers and an overwhelming sense of peace; The Matchbox is the perfect family beach house settled on the Rye coastline. Inside, exposed wood and whitewashed floors ensure calm throughout, while the decking and al fresco living areas encourage a life spent outside. Along the coast is the pretty town of Rye, arguably southeast England’s most quintessential town, where cobbled streets and crooked half-timbered buildings house glimmering antique shops and boutique artisans. A luxury self-catering home by the sea created for slow, sun bleached and carefree days.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Head upstairs to the elegant and harmonious master bedroom, where the king-size bed nestles comfortably under the eaves. Through the reclaimed wooden doors lies the en suite, with bath tub and handheld shower. On the ground floor are two further bedrooms, one twin and one king-size, along with one family bathroom with roll top bathtub and handheld shower and one wet room with WC.

Outside

With a south-facing decking overlooking Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and the sea beyond, The Matchbox’s humble al fresco living space allows the gentle, quiet call of birds to take centre stage. Early risers will be in their element at this luxury Winchelsea beach house; while the brood slumber the morning away, wrap hands around a steaming mug of tea, perch on the steps and listen to the dawn chorus crescendo as the skies brighten across the horizon.

For Relaxation

With Camber Sands, Hastings, Pett Level and Dungeness all within a short drive, buckets and spades will be forever at the ready. Wander the cobbled streets of Rye, explore the castles and abbeys which dot the Sussex landscape and celebrate the humble scallop at the Rye Bay Scallop Festival at the end of February. For those with energy to burn or a penchant for adventure, hot air balloon flights, boat charters and water sports are all in abundance along the coast; further afield, the South Downs National Park offers exceptional hiking.

Practicalities

There is parking for two small cars or one large car on the private driveway, with additional free road parking. The unmade lane to access the property is not suitable for low slung cars. The Matchbox is well-equipped with an electric oven and four hobs, a fridge freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Our Take

Property Owner Piers says

We fell in love with The Matchbox as soon as we saw it! Its unique and private position next to Rye Nature Reserve and the beach beyond make any stay here a restful one. In winter we love to cosy up by the woodburner while in summer we throw open the windows and listen to the sound of the waves.
