Self-catering cottage-style farmhouse in Hay on Wye

Introduction

Blending seamlessly with the burning waning of seasons of the surrounding Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, Alchemy Hill's ochre façade, sitting comfortably amongst wildflowers and meadows, wouldn’t look an ounce out of place on the set of a Jane Austen adaptation. Inside, this luxury self-catering home’s raw beauty takes on a refined, elegant role; modestly gorgeous, casually grand but never distracting eyes from the ever-changing weather rambling over an undulating horizon.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With a walnut four-poster king-size bed, mountain views and an en suite shower room, Alchemy Hill's master bedroom offers the perfect spot for mornings lingering in bed, drinking tea and flicking through magazines. There are two further bedrooms on the first floor of the house, one four-poster king with en suite bathroom and one twin with en suite shower. On the ground floor, with tall vaulted ceilings and large French doors leading out onto the garden, is the final bedroom, complete with an oak four-poster king-size bed and an adjoining shower room.

Outside

The landscaped gardens, dotted with outdoor sofas and plenty of idyllic picnic spots, have been designed with bees in mind, ensuring happy pollinators can lazily bob from flower to flower without a single care in the world. For the ramblers in the group, walk straight from the door and over the courtyard, through the wooden gate and under windswept woodland and magical birdsong before emerging between the wild ponies and hares onto acres upon acres of wild moorland.

For Relaxation

With gentle interiors, sweeping mountainous vistas and a luxurious wood-fired al fresco hot tub, there really is no need to venture too far. Spend summer days lounging with ice-cold, mint-infused drinks on the lawn, read by the wood burner in the living room, or gather together around the al fresco kitchen, barbecue filling the air, as the day loses its heat and darkens to twinkling skies. If all those views of moody peaks and hills induce a bout of itchy feet, there is no better place in the United Kingdom to don the walking boots and head out on a day of adventure; the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and River Wye are all just a short drive into the horizon.

Practicalities

There is parking available for five cars. The country-style kitchen features a stainless steel Smeg cooker with two ovens and eight gas burners, a large fridge-freezer, walk-in larder, wine cooler and Dualit coffee machine. A washing machine and tumble dryer are also available. The hot tub is a unique wood-fired affair which takes a little time to warm up.

We fell in love with this magical landscape and were struck by its wildness and beauty. The views of the Black Mountains are truly breathtaking. Watch the sun rise and the mist linger in the Wye valley. The stillness here encourages you to pause and realise everything is ok.
