Luxury self-catering accommodation in New Romney
On Kent’s marshy south coast, this is a town steeped in maritime legend, once on key smuggling routes and now a tourist pull for summer days and wintry walks.
This small town was formerly a coastal fishing settlement, hence its maritime connections. Now more than a mile inland thanks to the tides of time, New Romney is a marsh town with a Norman church, high street and a collection of bright, contemporary murals depicting town scenes; 14 at the last count. There are some great examples of old buildings as you walk around the small town, including the ruins of a priory, a row of almshouses and a 14th century merchant’s house, making this area a perfectly picturesque self-catering base.
From here, days out are often beach-centric, with Dungeness to the south and Folkestone to the north. Further afield, Hastings and Eastbourne provide the resort factor sought after by those wanting a prom, donkey rides and a good stretch of swimming beaches. Take buckets and spades to Camber, a sweep of dunes just half an hour south and known for its kitesurfing, birdwatching and ocean-dipping offerings. Near here, Rye’s historic inland town has pubs and quaint tea shops; stock up on local produce before hitting the sands for a weekend picnic.
