Luxury self-catering accommodation in Barford St John

One foot in Oxfordshire, one in the heavenly Cotswolds, this tiny village is well placed for those who love picking through picturesque hamlets, rambling through meadows, or sitting in a local pub with a pint of ale.

Peace-lovers will appreciate this little village made up of a handful of cottages, a stone manor house and a church dating back to the 12th century. To indicate how secluded the village once was, the airfield here was used as the base for secret jet plane tests, though now it's more commonplace to find sheep grazing the flat expanse. Wild green walks in the Cotswold countryside are a short hop west, and there are many little towns to discover in the general locale.

Banbury is a market town on the River Cherwell, with an atmospheric old town, plus a museum and old boatyard; tours are available here for narrowboat enthusiasts. Between Barford St John and Banbury is the stately pile of Broughton Castle, a country home with its own moat, a great hall, and a multitude of rooms to explore. Pile into Bicester shopping village afterwards for a little indulgence with fabulous clothing and homewares at outlet prices.
