Luxury self-catering accommodation in the Chiltern Hills

Close to London and taking a diagonal spread across south east England, these rolling hills are home to hikers, walkers and picnic-loving families.

Proximity to the city of London has given The Chilterns perfect day-trip status for city dwellers who can be hiking its green routes within a short time of leaving home. Schools decamp groups of backpacked children for hiking trips, and couples come here for tranquil dog-walks. Some of England's prettiest villages are here: Nettlebed in South Oxfordshire had a strong 14th-century tile industry and still maintains its bustling village spirit. Great Missenden is a scenic spot in Bucks and home town to author Roald Dahl; the local museum tells his story.

Skirting the south of The Chilterns is Henley, river town and site of the annual Royal Regatta, one of the world's most prestigious rowing races. Time your visit for when the boating antics are taking place and set up a riverside picnic to cheer on the racing rowers. The Thames carves its own snakelike path through these parts: catch it at Goring, where weirs and islands dot the area. Ale-lovers won't mind making the drive to the north of the Hills, where Tring Brewery pulls core beers for thirsty guests; pick up some goodies on-site to add to your picnic hamper.
