Sitting amidst the forest across the water from Ullapool, this luxury self-catering cottage is the ultimate destination for star-crossed lovers to flee to. With its own private beach from which to watch dolphins, the occasional whale and otters playing, a wonderfully private location and an al fresco hot tub under the shy but bewitching dancing Aurora, Castaway is a place to retreat when the modern world gets a little too loud. 

Bedrooms and Bathroom

Wooden ceilings and rustic stone walls create a cosy mountain lodge appeal in this characterful Highland cottage. The en suite bathroom features a bath tub with shower attachment; turn the lights out and gaze up at the twinkling stars from a lavender infused bath, before sinking into the king-size four poster bed, the sound of snow falling on the roof the gentlest of lullabies. It's all about the setting when it comes to Castaway.


Enjoying a surprisingly mild climate thanks to the magic touch of the Gulf Stream, subtropical gardens and bright blooms are in abundance on Loch Broom. Toughened and wild souls will relish an exhilarating scramble up An Teallach, a hardy hike of three distinct summits over 3,000 feet above sea level. For those who would prefer to keep their feet firmly on the ground, tuck into romantic picnics in Castaway’s gardens, where only the butterflies and views of soaring mountains will vie for lovers’ attention.

For Relaxation

It’s all but impossible not to be captivated by Mother Nature while at this Scottish hideaway. Seals and dolphins gambol in the waters, red deer gallop on land and soaring eagles dominate overhead. Rich in beauty and heritage, look forward to fishing trips, highland walks and ambles around historical sites. Don't miss the sunset from the beach; see the mountainous skyline ablaze in shades of amber and amethyst.


The final mile to Castaway requires an all-wheel drive. A vehicle can be hired in Inverness or the owners will gladly taxi you on request. The property has a fridge, freezer, oven, hob, microwave, coffee machine, washing machine and dryer. The owners live close by and are on hand should you have any requests.

Just for you The owners of Castaway go over and beyond the usual and provide a very personal level of attention and service. They can offer to have the fisherman deliver a lobster to the jetty and then will cook and prepare it for you. Guests can also hop on the their boat for a pootle over the loch to Ullapool and enjoy a relaxing lunch without having to worry about cars. A chance to experience life like a true local.  

Wildlife Castaway is situated on the Dundonnell Estate where, by prior appointment, deer stalking or fishing can be arranged with the local gamekeeper. The estate has introduced pine martens and red squirrels as part of a regeneration programme and these charming characters can be spotted in the gardens at Castaway!

Green Fingers A visit to Wester Ross would not be complete without a visit to Inverewe Gardens. A lush, tropical oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross, this world-famous 54 acre historic garden is one of Scotland’s most popular botanical attractions. It is surrounded by over 2,000 acres of estate managed for conservation. Highlights include the most northerly planting of rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, olearia from New Zealand, Tasmanian eucalypts, and rhododendrons from China, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent.

Natural Beauty The glittering Hebridean waters have an abundance of marine wildlife; keep your eyes peeled for whales, dolphins, porpoises, sharks – the great creatures of the sea - with a wildlife safari cruise. In the spring and early summer take a trip to the enchanted Shiant Isles, home to many thousands of puffins, guillemots, razorbills and other seabirds.

The fish 'straight out of the sea' that is delivered to the jetty by local fishing boats is nothing short of spectacular!

Experience a classic Scottish coaching inn with a visit to The Old Inn, overlooking Gairloch Harbour thirty miles away from Castaway. The best of local produce, real ales and outstanding seafood dishes have won The Old Inn several 'Pub of The Year' awards. Travel a little further to find The Torridon Restaurant by Achnasheen. With it's three rosette dining, this celebrated eatery is set in 58 acres of parkland at the end of a magnificent sea loch. For a truly special gastronomic experience, travel through the Highlands to the Applecross Inn, where food is freshly picked (or caught) the same day it is served onto a plate.
