Luxury self-catering home in Huxham near Glastonbury, Somerset, UK

Exquisitely handsome yet oh-so-homely,  Amethyst Meadows is a pic’n’mix of all sorts and altogether something quite splendid. Set between Glastonbury and Castle Cary in the rural idyll of Huxham, this luxury self-catering farmhouse ensures a warm welcome from the very moment of arrival, with the help of its classical Georgian exterior festooned in frilly old English roses and swags of wisteria. Inside you’ll find exposed stone walls, wooden beams, open fires, lavish bedrooms and roll tops overlooking rolling Somerset countryside. The English country dream.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

On the first floor, the master suite flaunts a super king-size bed and en suite with rainfall shower and freestanding copper tub. The master guest suite features a Lombok sleigh bed and en suite bathroom with shower over, whilst the second guest suite has a cherry sleigh bed and en suite shower room overlooking the garden. Also on the first floor is the family bathroom with separate shower and Victorian double bed guest room. Up a short flight of stairs in the eaves sits the spacious twin and its en suite with freestanding bath. The adjoining annex houses a beautiful king-size and twin bedroom which share a bathroom with overhead shower.

The house enjoys one acre of private grounds set in a further seven acres of paddocks. Sunbathe in steamer chairs, somersault across the lawn or amble down to pluck plums from the sun-dappled orchard. There’s also a tennis court for those who fancy a family match. Nuzzling in a fold of the Mendip Hills, the historic market town of Castle Cary is your nearest hive of activity. Spend an afternoon in Kilver Court Designer Village, founded by Roger Saul of Mulberry fame, or stock up on more wholesome produce at Jon Thorner’s farm shop. Visit Cadbury Castle and walk along to the Queen’s Arms in Corton Denham, the owner’s favourite local watering hole.

For Relaxation

Wile away a morning strolling the grounds admiring the hens and small flock of Dartmoor Greyface sheep, then an afternoon reading a paperback in one of the roll tops. After dark, toast campfire treats on the fire bowl or flee to the media room with its 65” flatscreen TV and Sonos sound system. Sundays are the best day of the week, when you can stuff a roast dinner in the Aga and make the two mile trek for an Aperol Spritz at the local, all before returning to a fragrant al fresco country feast finished off with plum pie and ice cream.

The Practicalities

There is space for six cars on the driveway and overspill at the back of the house. Please note a free-range cat and chickens roam the grounds, fed daily by the owner's friend who will not disturb your stay. The kitchen boasts an American style fridge/freezer, a four-oven Aga and a combination grill/microwave/oven with induction hob. There is also a washing machine and dryer, plus two dishwashers to assist after dinner parties and a Nespresso machine for the morning after.

Our Take

Property Owner Andrew says

Our home has brought us back to our roots where previous generations of our family farmed. We love the laid-back and in many ways unchanged way of life here in rural Somerset, a comfortable retreat with fine country views, great walks and cosy pubs, yet within easy access of civilisation.
