Amethyst Meadows | Luxury Self-Catering | Glastonbury, Castle Cary

Amethyst Meadows

Huxham, Glastonbury, Somerset, UK

Pack your finest weekend attire and zip down English country roads to the haven that is Amethyst Meadows. This Grade-II listed Georgian farmhouse sits between Glastonbury and Castle Cary in the hamlet of Huxham, offering luxury escapes in the glorious hummocky hills of Somerset. Enjoy open fires, a tennis court and your very own (no maintenance) menagerie, at what will fast become your favourite home-from-home.

Exquisitely handsome yet oh-so-homely, Amethyst Meadows is a veritable pic’n’mix and altogether quite splendid. Set in the rural idyll of Huxham, this luxury self-catering farmhouse grants a warm welcome from the moment of arrival with the help of its classical Georgian exterior festooned in English roses and wisteria. Encompassed by sweeping grounds and close to many local attractions, you can lose yourself to serenity in the company of loved ones (as well as the resident hens and Dartmoor Greyface sheep), or piece together a list of holiday to-dos as long as your arm. Enjoy trips to Kilver Court Designer Village or Cadbury Castle, before toasting campfire treats on the fire bowl on return.

Inside Amethyst Meadows you’ll find exposed stone walls, wooden beams, open fires and roll tops overlooking rolling Somerset countryside. Rewarding guests with plenty of space to both congregate for conversation and enjoy peaceful solitude, each room offers comfort in abundance. On rainy days, sink into soft sofas and read paperbacks in the bathtubs, fires ablaze. Later, as children scurry off to the media room with its 65” flatscreen TV, games console and Sonos sound system, grown-ups can gather around the dining table for cheese, wine and belly-aching anecdotes. Come evening, every guest will find blissful repose across the seven sumptuous bedrooms.

The house enjoys one acre of private grounds set in a further seven acres of paddocks – a dream come true for children and four-pawed pals. As Grandma and Grandpa relax in the steamer chairs, they can keep eyes on the youngsters as they somersault across the lawn or amble down together to pluck plums from the sun-dappled orchard. Here, Sundays are one of the best days of the week; start with a family match on the tennis court, stuff a roast dinner in the Aga and then make the two-mile trek for well-earned tipple at the local, all before returning to a fragrant al fresco country feast finished off with plum pie and tea in the garden.

From the owner

“Our home has brought us back to our roots where previous generations of our family farmed. We love the laid-back and, in many ways, unchanged way of life here in rural Somerset; a verdant bubble with fine country views, great walks and cosy pubs, yet within easy access of civilisation.”

From the owner

The original farmhouse at Amethyst Meadows dates back to the 17th century, while the large Georgian ‘extension’ at the front was later added in around 1750 and forms the majority of the property. There were a few additions made in the Victorian era, but the house has been largely unaltered since then, aside from cosmetic improvements and modernisation!

Until about 20 years ago Amethyst Meadows was a working farmhouse on a dairy farm. We believe it has always functioned as a private working farm that was passed down through the generations. However, there was clearly an injection of cash when the Georgian frontage was built, which is unlikely to have been generated by the farm income alone - one of the house's great mysteries!

The house was sold off after the last generation passed away as it was in desperate need of repair, but the land around is still farmed by some of the descendants. We are the second owners since it ceased being a farm; the first ones made significant structural repairs, rebuilding both gable end walls of the Georgian frontage.

The restoration work has been a labour of love, and much it was completed by Andrew himself; a far cry from the hectic London lifestyle we came out here to escape.

Guest Testimonials

The family had a wonderful stay filled with love, laughter and fun. The house has all the home comforts and more to keep any family entertained and comfortable. We had a great stay and enjoyed the hot tub and games room the most. The weather was brilliant and the hosts were helpful if needed. We’d love to come back!

Four generations of our family have had an absolutely wonderful time at Amethyst Meadows. It is a beautiful house which is so well equipped, you have really thought of everything. Tennis, hot tub, table tennis and pool table provided all sorts of entertainment... Even our 90-year-old Papa played! Thank you for providing a lovely place for us to create family memories!

An amazing house with fantastic facilities and great attention to detail with beautiful décor. The hot tub and tennis court went so well together, as did the BBQ and the firepit. All of our families came together for 40th birthday celebrations and it couldn’t have been more perfect in such a lovely setting, plus the gorgeous weather helped! Thank you.

Absolutely fantastic house! Loved spending my 30th birthday here with my family. The attention to detail is unbelievable and we all complimented the style. We wanted to give the owners a shout out for being so attentive and welcoming, this really made our stay. Three generations loved the whole house, used every room and spent lots of time in the hot tub and on the tennis courts. The children really enjoyed being surrounded by animals as well as lots of open space. We’ll be back. Thank you so, so much.

I booked the house for a surprise birthday gathering for myself, my daughter and a few of her friends. The house welcomed us with open arms and we had a ball. We spent the majority of the time cooking, listening to music, chatting, singing and dancing. It was just fantastic. It was all so relaxing and we enjoyed the outside space too, along with the fire and the TV on a Sunday night! This is a beautiful home, thank you so much for allowing us to stay. The dogs also enjoyed the garden too. Lovely house, lovely hosts and a great time was had by all. Thank you.

Three generations have had a superb week. All aspects of the house and garden were just right for us to play, exercise, explore, sit in the sunshine, rest or just catch up. And the hot tub – wow – what a winner. Evenings with supper under the stars and the fire crackling and spitting. It was magical. To the owners, thank you so much for making it all so available to us.

We had the most wonderful time staying in your beautiful home. We visited local places of interest, had wonderful windy walks, and enjoyed a fabulous roast in The Manor House Inn. We enjoyed our family time here enormously and the facilities you provide here are outstanding. Thank you so, so much!

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful home. Twelve adults and two little ones have made some fantastic memories together, and we’ve all fallen in love with your house and hope to return together one day!

Thank you for a wonderful stay in such a fantastic property. The house was the perfect luxury venue for a 70th birthday celebration! We thoroughly enjoyed the facilities and ambiance and will be highly recommending our stay here to our friends and family! We hope to return!

Thank you for the most wonderful time in your gorgeous house - we loved it so much. It has been the perfect place for us. We will always remember sitting in the garden in t-shirts in February! We will be back for my 60th!

It was amazing and even though we were delayed by the snow, when we arrived it was breathtaking. We have stayed with Unique Homestays previously and always have high expectations of your properties and are never disappointed.

What a great property! Beautifully done and very well appointed. The owners have done amazingly well; the kitchen is very well stocked and there are fabulous outside spaces that work perfectly for families. Thank you so much.

We immediately felt we had arrived somewhere special. The house is stunning and it is in such a beautiful setting. Thank you for a lovely stay.

What a cracking place. Lovely location and the way we were looked after was exceptional. I can truly say it is the best place we have ever stayed in.

One of the most relaxing, serene rural settings I´ve experienced in a long time. The stroll around the gardens is not to be missed - the greenhouses and vegetable patches are great! I enjoyed watching the chickens make their way around the property, while I sat in the garden, drinking a glass of wine and reading a book. Thank you for making us feel so welcome and sharing your wonderful home.
