Those looking for a wholesome family break in the country need look no further than this luxury self-catering holiday cottage set amidst flower-filled gardens in the rolling hills of Wiltshire. The picturesque hilltop town of Shaftesbury is just a short drive away, offering a plethora of independent boutiques, tearooms and galleries to explore.
Surrounded by ambrosial woodland filled with bluebells and wild garlic, this 17th century gamekeeper’s cottage on the Dorset-Wiltshire border has been refashioned using one-off art pieces and family heirlooms. The Woodlanders is undeniably stylish, beautifully eclectic and sprinkled with sophistication. Enveloped in Helen Dooley designed gardens, this luxury self-catering cottage is the perfect retreat after a day spent strolling around Thomas Hardy country, as far from the madding crowd as you could hope for.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
The ground floor is home to a twin and super-king bedroom, each decorated with splashes of geometric textiles and boasting views of the woodland beyond. The curved staircase winds upwards from the entrance hall to the super-king master bedroom which occupies the entire first floor. The Woodlanders has two generous bathrooms and separate WC.
The cottage gardens comprise three neat lawns, one of which transforms into a beautifully chaotic wild grass meadow throughout the summer months. The lawns provide a heavenly milieu for Champagne picnicking, whilst the wooden climbing frames yield more excitement for children. The cottage is equally as stunning when winter falls; think snowy woodland walks from the front door and hunkering down for the night with a bottle of red warmed on the hearth. For a day out, history buffs can head off to explore Shaftesbury Abbey ruins and climb the golden cobbles of Ridley Scott’s famous Hovis Hill.
There is nothing like a few hours of peace and seclusion to foster your creativity; The Woodlanders is a peaceful sanctuary offering just that. Head up the path to the garden house to enjoy its uninterrupted views which are guaranteed to ignite the imagination, whether it transpires into a countryside-inspired watercolour or a poem about the silver birch, pheasants and honey bees, you will soon fall hopelessly in love with Wiltshire.
The cottage is well equipped, with a washer-dryer dishwasher, gas oven, microwave and fridge freezer. There is parking for up to three cars on the driveway. There is also a shower and WC in the garden house.

Go for a morning walk round the 14 acre coppice with the dog, or head down the hill through the fields to the village shop. The sun sets on the valley across from the house and the views from the upper deck are beautiful. For some peace and quiet retreat to the garden house.

FOOD AND DRINK
Families will love to spend time in the open-plan kitchen and living area, which is the real heart of the house. Cook beneath high wooden beams and fill the air with scent of your country supper. In summer, pull open the double doors and let the sun pour in across the dining table, or take the party outside for an al fresco feast at sunset.
If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).
Head to Phythouse Kitchen Garden just three miles away, wander around the 18th century walled garden before enjoying a delicious meal with hand-picked produce straight from the soil; a perfect location to eat, shop and relax. For fine dining, The Forester has picked up the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for its excellent local dishes, wine list and great service.
