Luxury Self-Catering Riverside Cottage | Leominster, Herefordshire

Atelier Rose

Leominster, Herefordshire, UK

Hidden behind topiary pyramids in a quaint riverside village near Leominster, this luxury home in rural Herefordshire flaunts vintage charm and charisma in abundance. Ring the old pull-string bell and push open the door to botanical cornicing, four-poster beds and a greenery-filled orangery complete with William Holland spa bath. For larger self-catering groups, book in conjunction with Hollyhocks, the Tudor timber-frame cottage next door.

Introduction

With a history dating back to medieval times and a sculptor for an owner, this unique Herefordshire home was always going to be packed to its ancient rafters with original relics and interesting artefacts. Having been in the same family for decades, much care has been taken by the owners to ensure its characterful past is well kept. In the hallway, Murano glass chandeliers from a Venice honeymoon gently illuminate vintage furnishings and in the garden, topiary creations shaped by the owner's father create an enchanted wonderland for children. Settled in the quaint village of Eardisland close to the Welsh border, this large self-catering cottage is perfectly placed for year-round country pursuits.

Inside

Allowing the historical framework of this adored family home shine through, glinting chandeliers cast a soft glow over delicate plasterwork while the original Georgian staircase sweeps up to four poster beds, muslin drapes and free-standing rolltops. Decorative coving and exposed medieval walls nod to the house's characterful past, with soft, chalky hues offering a sense of calm. On wintry days, curl up in the cinema room with its Harmon Kardon projector, or let Grandparents challenge little ones to a game of ‘babby foot’ before settling down by the open fire. Cowshed lotions invite long bubble baths and vintage grandfather clocks strike on the hour when (not if) you lose track of time.

Outside

When not forming a queue in the orangery to fill the giant tin hot tub (holding one tonne of water!), meander through the fruit and olive trees to discover the maze of secret gardens that lie beyond the French doors. Let warmer months tempt croquet on the lawn, or set up camp on the banks of the River Arrow to enjoy private fishing rights while children play hide and seek between the topiary pyramids. A dining table seating 12 invites drawn-out summertime suppers, when birds hop in the walled hedgerows and flower garden alongside. For excursions, head to Hay-On-Wye for its bookshops and annual Literary Festival, or Leominster just a mile away for salvage yards and antique shopping.

From the owner

“Atelier Rose has been a family home for over 25 years and the house holds a lot of special memories for us, especially our wedding, which we held on the lawn.”

From the owner

We have a special spot here on the river Arrow. Our favourite room is the master bedroom upstairs, which has a stunning double aspect. It's filled with light in the mornings, a wonderful place to escape and read a book on the Californian king-size bed in the evenings. Our son’s favourite room however would have to be the large cinema room dating all the way back to the 15th-century – we often find him hidden away in there playing his Xbox, even in the summer months!

The beautiful dining room also holds a lot of wonderful memories for us. We have had so many special evenings in there with friends, a roaring fire crackling away. The original plaster coving on the ceilings provides a real Georgian dining experience.

The privacy of our extensive garden along with the central village location really does give the house a very special feeling. Whether it's relaxing on the lawns drinking Pimms, enjoying a game of croquet, or watching the snow falling while enjoying the bespoke eco spa bath, Atelier Rose provides a unique experience that we hope all guests will enjoy as much as we have over the years.
