Self-catering Victorian home for hire in Fowey, Cornwall

Introduction

Hidden behind trees and surrounded in peace and quiet, this self-catering home was designed with family get-togethers in mind. By day, stroll into Fowey to enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty on the harbour wall before returning to The Botanist to recline under the willow tree with a good book and glass of something chilled. As the sun begins to fade, continue life outside at the summer house where a sunken hot tub hides behind greenery beneath the light of the moon.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

On the first floor are the first of The Botanist’s six bedrooms. The master overlooks the front garden, with its super king-size mustard sleigh bed, clawfoot bath tub and en suite shower room. There is a further super king-size four-poster en suite bedroom on the first floor, along with a botanical inspired king-size bedroom and family bathroom with bath and shower. In the eaves of the house are two further king-size bedrooms and one dreamy zip-and-link which lies under a star-studded ceiling, all sharing the top floor shower room. There are two WCs on the ground floor, one in the cloakroom and one in the utility.

Outside

A flourishing symphony of colour and scent awaits as the doors are flung open to the walled garden on early spring mornings. Enjoy hot croissants with lashings of butter on the al fresco dining area next to the tinkling sound of water, perch under the Victorian ironwork with a cup of tea on the front porch or challenge the family to a game of croquet on the field in front of the hot tub. Beyond the trees which border The Botanist, turquoise waters and secluded coves invite balmy skinny dips, long hikes and afternoons sipping cocktails under umbrellas in seaside towns.

For Relaxation

After a family breakfast between the butterflies in the garden, pack backpacks with beach towels and picnic food and head west along the coast path towards Menabilly and Polridmouth Cove. Along the way, venture down secret cliffside trails to deserted inlets and warm shallow waters before settling with backs leant on sun-baked rocks, feet buried in the sand. By night, choose any of Fowey’s chic bistros for the finest combination of fresh seafood and cold Champagne.

Practicalities

There is parking available for up to six cars between two drives outside the property. The large kitchen includes an induction hob, electric oven, grill, double fridge-freezer and coffee machine; the Aga is currently for decorative purposes only. There is a separate utility room with washer, dryer and drying space. The owner's five acre field adjoining the property is the perfect space to exercise dogs, complete with gate and access to an ancient wood with a trickling stream.

Our Take

Property Owner Lorraine says

My favourite place to relax and enjoy the tranquility at The Botanist is the hot tub. I like to take a leisurely walk through the formal garden, perhaps sitting on the curved seating area to listen to the water feature, before wandering up to sit in the tub and gaze across the hills and sky.

The higgledy-piggledy streets of Fowey are filled to the brim with the smell of baking bread, delectable delis and fish straight from the fishermen on the quay.
