The Glasshouse | Luxury Self-Catering House | Cardigan, Wales

The Glasshouse

Cardigan, Ceredigion, Wales, UK

On the banks of the River Teifi with a front row seat overlooking the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve, The Glasshouse is a wildlife lover’s dream near Cardigan and the Welsh coast. Enormous skies and a meandering estuary collide outside the apex window of this modern self-catering retreat that is seemingly set between two worlds, where otters race on the water's edge and starling murmurations dance across flamingo pink skies.

Introduction

Composed by a duo of classical musicians, The Glasshouse is a soothing waterside retreat where honest, natural materials reflect the marshlands and ash trees which form the landscape outside. Evolving from humble cottage to contemporary sanctuary over the span of 100 years, this luxury home was designed with nature and deep relaxation in mind. A riverside hot tub promises a true escape into the wild, where connection to each other and Mother Nature far outweigh any to tech or office emails.

Inside

Floorboards reclaimed from the trees which were cut down in the garden and slate from the quarry up the road; The Glasshouse has risen from the very earth on which it stands. Renovated with passion, precision and creativity at its very heart, spend a serene morning moment watching birds soar over the water before a riotous family breakfast of jam-laden crumpets and steaming pots of coffee on the bespoke dining table. As day turns to night, retreat to one of five indulgent bedrooms spread over the ground and first floors.

Outside

Surrounded by two and a half acres of woodlands and stream, lake and marshlands, The Glasshouse’s gardens are a true celebration of Afon Teifi’s rhythm; letting the tides, weather and habitats set the ever-evolving scene. For the wild swimmers in the group, take a bracing dip in the river followed by warming up in the bubbling hot tub, before settling around the fire pit for hot toddies and barbecued sausages as the sun sets fire to the sky.

From the owner

“The minute we saw the view from the house, we fell in love.”

From the owner

Cardigan is Tim´s family home and he has been coming to the area his whole life. When he spotted The Glasshouse for sale, we saw a chance to renovate a dilapidated house with jungle-like, overgrown gardens and a lake in an unbelievably magical situation.

Being situated right next to a wildlife reserve makes it feel like we are in a David Attenborough documentary every day with incredible wildlife from birds and fish to otters just outside the windows. The house was originally the water bailiff´s cottage where he would watch out for illegal salmon poaching and there are still the odd signs of his work, with a giant winch for pulling in the boats and a small hidden lagoon with its own slipway. At the very far corner of the property, at low tide, there is a secret bench amongst the willows for spying on poachers or otters, or these day stand-up paddleboarders!

The Glasshouse is a haven for any water-related activities. We have our own fishing rights and there is an abundance of trout, sea bass, mullet and salmon (though the salmon has to be returned to the water). From the pontoon it is easy to go river swimming, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding or just simply sit next to the water and enjoy the view, whether at sunrise or sunset.
