Figtree House
Farleton, Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, UK
Green velvet hills threaded through with glittering rivers: the impressive Cumbrian landscape puts Figtree House right on the scenic country map. The owner is an interior designer, so when it came to decorating her luxury farmhouse retreat on the borders of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, she made it just as colourful as the land it sits in. Perfect for nature-lovers and celebratory self-catering get-togethers, here families can fully immerse in the area’s verdant beauty before some serious R&R.
Introduction
This stylish 17th century luxury self-catering farmhouse near Kirkby Lonsdale is perfectly private, nestled among 17 acres of Cumbrian countryside where the only neighbours are of the adorable furry and feathered variety. Tucked away down a winding country lane, Figtree House is within walking distance of a great gastro pub for those with a hankering for a gourmet supper and a good burgundy. For the outdoorsy types, the nearby fells offer walking opportunities a-plenty, whilst the romantics will covet the waterfalls and scenic country picnic spots nearby.
Inside
At Figtree House, the traditional façade betrays the beguiling mix of sumptuous fabrics and sophisticated opulence found within. Start the day gathered around plates piled high with buttery toast in the spacious kitchen before heading off to explore. After a day amongst the dramatic Lake District scenery, the Egyptian cotton bath towels, locally-made bathing products and scented candles featured in each of the bathrooms will be a welcome treat. Soak and spruce up before towelling off and hunkering down by the woodburner, film and bottle of red at the ready.
Outside
In summer months it’ll be difficult to leave the chocolate-box cottage gardens awash with colour and alive with flowers. But, if you can tear yourself away, a day trip to the old market town of Kirkby Lonsdale offers the chance to browse its boutiques and cobbled streets with evocative names such as Salt Pie and Jingling Lane. To exercise legs and pump the heart, pick up one of the many trails right from the doorstep and come nose-to-nose with unyielding natural beauty. In the evening, fire up the barbecue for dinner en plein air and watch the sun slip from the sky.

From the owner
“I originally bought this beautiful farmhouse for my family to come to to relax and rejuvenate. These days we hope all our guests appreciate the luxurious-yet-homely ambience throughout.”

The farm and buildings are the sole surviving structures of the ancient Aikbank (Oakbank) hamlet. The hamlet and estate predated the Norman Conquest and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Figtree Farm was formerly two holdings and dwellings. No records have so far been found as to when the houses and buildings were actually erected; however, the original exposed oak beams, worn stone steps and oaken staircase and flooring attest to considerable age.
Local hearsay is that two lime kilns on Farleton Knott (the hill behind Figtree House) went with the farms. Two kilns are still to be seen on the Knott, but whether they are the ones to the hamlet are still to be verified.
Bridleways and public footpaths criss-cross Farleton Knot (rising to over 200 metres above sea level) and the surrounding farmland, affording invigorating hikes and unparalleled 360 degree views. These views take in the Lakeland and Pennine fells, the Kent Estuary and upper-reaches of Morecambe Bay and, inland, the ancient access-way to the beautiful and atmospheric valley of the Lune River.
